Caleb didn't sleep.
He'd tossed and turned for hours, glancing up at the wooden ceiling, watching as faint moonlight filtered through the cracks in the curtain. Whenever he shut his eyes, he remembered the beast—the attack, the killing, Kael's change. The wolf.
But the most troubling aspect of it was what came next.
Neither the ash. Nor the blood.
The voice.
It hadn't spoken out loud, but in his mind, it was as clear as thought.
Now, a bit after five o'clock in the morning, Caleb sat at the window with his hoodie pulled tight and an encircling mug of hot black coffee cooling on the sill. There was fog outside, wisps creeping between the trees at the property's edge. No cell signal.
He had not handled the sketchpad since.
At first, he thought that it was shock, a delirious hallucination due to stress. But just before dawn, something returned—this time not a voice, but a disturbance in his sense of perception. Like instinct sharpening itself.
Then there it was.

The panel darkened when Caleb blinked, but he knew it was there just beneath the surface, a second consciousness. It was not something he could turn off—it was a part of him now.
And it didn't seem to be something made for werewolves.
It was personal. Built around him.
However, just sitting around wouldn’t get him anywhere.
He got dressed, laced his boots, and shut the cabin door behind him. There was morning cold in the atmosphere, biting, but this was what he required to maintain his clarity of mind.
Well before the sun was fully up, the fog was lifting, and he was halfway through town already.
The streets of Blackwood Hollow were just beginning to come alive.
There were also street vendors who pushed carts in, spreading awnings and rolling open doors. Down the block, a bell rang out. It was a small, sleepy town—old buildings, a diner, a hardware store, and what seemed to be the town's lone bar.
Caleb turned a corner next to a small bakery and proceeded down the alley between two brick buildings.
Later that morning, at the Blackwood General Market, he spotted Kael near the loading dock, hauling crates off a flatbed truck with practiced ease. He was not surprised to see Caleb, but he didn't look particularly happy about it either.
"You again," Kael muttered without raising his head.
"You left out a lot of information last night."
Kael set down a crate and dried his hands on his shirt. "Thought you'd show up."
"I have to know what that thing was," Caleb said. "And what happened to me when it died."
Kael gradually turned towards him. "What occurred?"
"I was struck by. Information. Something referred to as the Lunar Ascendant System. It gave me stats—some kind of interface." Caleb paused, reading Kael's expression. “You don't know anything about it?”
Kael's brow creased. "No. Werewolves don't get systems. We get instincts. Bloodlines. Training. Yours speaks to you?"
"No. It's just. It knows things about me. Things I haven't told anyone."
Kael inhaled deeply. “That’s not how it’s supposed to be. Not for us.”
Caleb turned away, not sure what to say.
After a long silence, Kael went on, "There is one who may help. But he does not like questions. Does not trust strangers. Least of all ones sworn to secret powers."
“Then I won’t say anything to him,” Caleb replied. “I just need to know if I’m. something dangerous.”
Kael did not reply. He just grabbed another crate.
"Come back tonight," he instructed her. "Same place."
"Why?"
Kael's gaze shot up, his expression grim now. Because if that system picked you out, something else might be looking for it. And trust me—you don't want to be alone when it does.
Caleb nodded once and then walked away.
He still didn't have any answers, but at least he knew where to start.
