Chapter 19:The Unexpected Confession

1521 Words
The entire ride back to the estate was silent—too silent. The kind that sinks into your bones and refuses to let go. The air inside Kayden’s car felt colder than usual, heavy with unsaid words and something I couldn’t fully understand yet. I held the small box he’d given me earlier, the one containing the necklace. I should’ve been happy. I should’ve been floating with joy. But instead, my fingers trembled around it. My heartbeat wasn’t steady. It felt confused, scattered, unsure. Kayden parked in front of the mansion but didn’t step out immediately. Instead, he rested both hands on the steering wheel, breathing in deeply like he was fighting a battle inside himself. “Are you okay…?” I asked quietly. He didn’t look at me. “It’s nothing.” But his voice wasn’t cold—just… guarded. Like if he said more, everything would break apart. I unbuckled my seatbelt slowly. “Kayden. You’ve been acting strange since we left the restaurant. Did I do something wrong?” His jaw tightened. “No. You didn’t.” “But something is wrong.” He finally turned to look at me. His eyes held that same emotion that had been haunting me since the day I met him—something dark, something painful, something dangerous. Yet mixed with a softness only he ever showed me. “Get some rest,” he murmured. “We’ll talk tomorrow.” The moment he stepped out, I felt a sting in my chest. Why tomorrow? Why not now? Why was he suddenly pushing distance between us? I followed him out, but he walked so fast I almost had to jog to keep up. He usually slowed his pace for me. But tonight he didn’t look back once. Inside the mansion, I expected him to go to his study. Instead, he turned toward the west wing—the restricted part of the mansion I had never been allowed to enter. “Kayden?” He paused. I took a small step forward. “Can I come?” Just for a moment, something in him cracked. His expression twisted with conflict. Like he wanted to tell me yes, but something stronger forced him to say— “No.” Then he walked away. I stood frozen in the hallway long after he disappeared behind the dark oak door. That door I had always wondered about. That wing he kept locked. The one the staff refused to talk about. Something was wrong. Something big. And it was connected to him. I went back to my room and sat on the edge of the bed, fingers brushing the necklace again. I didn’t want to think the worst, but my mind kept running. Why did he look hurt? Why did he shut me out? What was in that locked wing? Before I could think further, a soft knock sounded on my door. “Come in,” I said quickly. Sophie stepped inside, her expression worried. “Miss… you’re needed downstairs.” My heart skipped. “Why? What happened?” She hesitated. “It’s the master. He asked for you.” Immediately, I rushed downstairs, my mind spinning in panic. I found Kayden in the main living room, leaning against the fireplace. His head was bowed. His shoulders tense. When he heard me enter, he lifted his gaze slowly. His eyes were red. Not from anger. Not from drinking. From holding back tears. “Kayden…” I walked toward him carefully, like approaching a wounded animal. He took a breath. “Sit.” I obeyed, sitting on the couch while he remained standing. The distance between us felt like a wall. He ran a hand through his hair and spoke in a low, heavy voice. “I wasn’t going to tell you. Not yet. But after tonight… keeping it hidden feels worse.” My heart raced. “Tell me what?” He exhaled shakily. “You keep asking why I’m distant sometimes… why I shut you out.” He looked away. “Why I told you to never enter the west wing.” “Yes,” I whispered. “I want to understand.” “You will.” He walked toward the window, staring outside as if searching for courage. “It started… three years ago.” My chest tightened. “My family was in danger,” he continued. “Not business danger. Real danger.” He swallowed hard. “Someone tried to kill my brother.” I gasped quietly. “Oh my God…” “But that wasn’t the end. They came after my mother too. And finally…” He turned toward me. “Me.” My breath caught. “Someone is after you?” “Not someone.” His voice dropped lower. “A group.” The room suddenly felt colder than the night outside. “And the west wing?” I whispered. He paused for a long moment… then answered, “It’s where I keep everything connected to them. Files, evidence, recordings.” His eyes darkened. “And the things I had to do to protect my family.” For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. “Kayden…” I said softly. “Why do you look so… guilty? You saved your family.” He shook his head. “You don’t understand.” He walked closer, stopping right in front of me. “I’m not proud of who I used to be. You think I’m cold sometimes, or dangerous…” He clenched his jaw. “It’s because I am.” “No,” I whispered immediately. “You’re not—” “You don’t know everything I’ve done.” “Then tell me.” He stared at me like I was the only person in the world who had ever asked to stay instead of run. “I was involved with them once. Before the attacks started. Before I knew what they were.” His voice cracked. “And that path almost destroyed everything.” I stood up slowly, closing the distance between us. “Why are you telling me this now?” I asked. His eyes softened. “Because the more time I spend with you, the harder it becomes to hide anything from you.” My heart thudded. “Mila…”—his voice dropped— “I don’t want to lose you. And I’m afraid that if you ever see the full truth, you’ll run.” I felt my throat tighten. Not from fear, but from how deeply those words cut. I placed a hand gently on his chest. “I’m still here.” His breath hitched. “You’re not… afraid?” “I’m worried. But not of you. I’m worried for you.” Something inside him broke open. He grabbed my hand, holding it like it was the only anchor he had left in the world. “You shouldn’t care about someone like me.” “I do.” His chest rose sharply. He lowered his forehead to mine, breathing against my lips. “You make me want to be better.” My eyes fluttered. “Then be.” “You don’t know how much I—” He stopped suddenly, swallowing hard. “You matter to me more than I should allow.” Silence fell. Heavy. Electric. Emotional. “Kayden…” I whispered. He lifted his head and looked at me with an expression filled with raw vulnerability. “I think I’m falling for you.” The earth crashed to a stop. My heart did too. Before I could respond, before I could breathe, he took a shaky step back, torn between wanting me and protecting me. “I shouldn’t have said that,” he muttered. “Forget it. Go to sleep.” “No.” I followed him as he tried to walk away. “You don’t confess something like that and walk off.” “I have to. If I stay near you right now, I’ll say things I can’t take back.” “Then say them,” I insisted. He stopped at the bottom of the stairs, his fists clenched. A storm of emotion raged in his eyes. “I can’t.” “Why?” “Because loving me is dangerous.” I reached out and gently touched his arm. “Let me decide that.” He closed his eyes in pain. “You don’t understand, Mila. The people after me? They don’t care who you are. They’ll use anyone close to me.” My breath shook. “So you want to push me away instead?” “I want to keep you alive.” Silence again. This time deeper. Harsher. Filled with the weight of everything unsaid. Finally, he whispered, “Goodnight.” And he walked away. I stood alone at the bottom of the stairs, clutching the railing as my heart battled between fear and love. Kayden had finally opened the door to his secrets. And I could tell… He wasn’t done. Not even close. But the scariest part? I wasn’t scared of him at all. I was scared of how much I wanted to stay.
