The morning after the bomb threat, Morgan found herself on edge as she walked through the halls of Sapphire Academy. The note left for her had rattled her, but she tried to maintain her composure. As she approached her locker, she noticed Tiffany standing nearby, a smug look on her face.
“Feeling nervous, Morgan?” Tiffany taunted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Maybe you should take the hint and leave before something worse happens.”
Morgan’s hands clenched into fists. “What’s your problem, Tiffany? Why do you care what happens to me?”
Tiffany stepped closer, her expression darkening. “Because you don’t belong here. You’re just a charity case trying to play in the big leagues.”
The tension between them was palpable, and it wasn’t long before the argument escalated into a physical altercation. They pushed and shoved each other, anger and frustration boiling over. Just as Morgan was about to land a punch, a firm hand grabbed her arm.
“Enough!” Coach Taylor’s authoritative voice cut through the chaos. The middle-aged blonde woman, head gym teacher at Sapphire Academy, pulled the two girls apart with surprising strength. “What’s going on here?”
“She started it,” Tiffany hissed, glaring at Morgan.
Coach Taylor looked between them, her face stern. “Both of you, to the principal’s office. Now.”
In the principal’s office, Principal Trask looked disappointed but not surprised. She listened to both sides of the story before making her decision.
“Morgan, you’re going home for the rest of the day,” Principal Trask said, her tone firm. “Tiffany, you’ll be staying for detention.”
As Morgan gathered her things to leave, she noticed a flicker of something in Tiffany’s eyes—fear. Once Morgan was out of the office, Tiffany slumped in her chair, her bravado fading.
Principal Trask leaned forward, her voice lowering. “You know what’s at stake, Tiffany. The Syndicate doesn’t tolerate failure.”
Tiffany’s eyes welled up with tears. “I’m trying, but it’s hard. I’m doing this for my mom.”
Principal Trask’s expression softened slightly. “Then you need to try harder. Monica’s safety depends on it.”
Morgan walked out of the school, her emotions swirling. The fight with Tiffany had left her angry and confused, and the idea of going home didn’t seem appealing. As she made her way towards the gate, she spotted Lila, who waved her over.
“Morgan, where are you going?” Lila asked, concern in her eyes.
“Home. Principal’s orders,” Morgan replied with a sigh.
Lila glanced around, then leaned in conspiratorially. “How about we skip school instead? My family’s jet is ready, and I was thinking we could go to Raven Cross Island.”
Morgan hesitated. “I don’t know, Lila. I’m not really in the mood.”
“Come on, it’ll be fun. We could use a break after everything that’s happened,” Lila urged. “Just think about it—sun, sand, and no worries for a few hours.”
After a moment’s consideration, Morgan nodded. “Alright, let’s go.”
The two girls quickly made their way to the private airstrip where Lila’s family jet awaited them. The flight to Raven Cross Island was short, and soon they were stepping onto the lush, exclusive island known only to the wealthiest socialites.
“Welcome to paradise,” Lila said with a grin as they walked through the island’s main market. “This place has an interesting history.”
As they browsed the luxurious shops, Lila explained, “The founders of Sapphire Academy discovered this island fifty years ago, before the academy was built. They say it has hidden mines filled with rare sapphires more valuable than diamonds. But after one of the original founders was killed, no one could find where the rest of the mines were.”
Morgan listened intently, fascinated by the island’s lore. As they admired the jewelry in one of the shops, a shadow fell over them. Morgan turned to see a man reaching for her purse.
“Hey!” she shouted, grabbing for the thief. The man took off, and Morgan instinctively gave chase, with Lila close behind.
The pursuit led them to an abandoned alley. Morgan caught up to the crook and tackled him to the ground, her anger and fear giving her strength. Just as she was about to deliver a final blow, a wave of dizziness hit her, and she began to have a panic attack.
The crook took advantage of her hesitation, reaching for a gun hidden in his jacket. Before he could pull the trigger, Lila stepped in. She drew a concealed blade and threw it with precision, the weapon lodging in the man’s neck. He fell to the ground, bleeding out.
Lila quickly grabbed the blade and cleaned it off with the man’s shirt before planting another knife on his body. Morgan, still trembling, stared at the scene in horror.
“Relax, Morgan,” Lila said calmly, her demeanor eerily composed. “My family has ties everywhere. One call and this will be like it never happened.”
Morgan’s panic intensified. “Lila, we… we just killed someone.”
Lila placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “He was a criminal. No one will miss him. Trust me, Morgan. We’re safe.”
She led Morgan back to the jet, guiding her through the market with a steady hand. Morgan’s mind raced, unable to process what had just happened. She felt like she was in a nightmare, one she couldn’t wake up from.
Back at the jet, Lila hid the real murder weapon, which unbeknownst to Morgan, had the Syndicate’s raven insignia on its shaft. As the jet took off, Morgan stared out the window, feeling a mixture of relief and dread.
“You did well, Morgan,” Lila said softly. “No one has to know about this. We’ll protect each other.”
Morgan nodded numbly, unable to find the words to express her fear and confusion. She leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes, hoping that the nightmare would end.
