THE FIRST MOVE

The summit hall felt different in daylight. Less like a battlefield. More like a trap. Cold sunlight spilled through the high arched windows, cutting across the long obsidian table where wolves and vampires had argued only hours before. The chairs remained where they had been abandoned during the chaos of the bond revelation. Empty. Watching. Kaelen stood near one of the tall windows, arms folded behind his back. Lucien moved quietly through the hall, studying the ancient stone walls as though they were part of a museum rather than the center of a growing political disaster. Aria leaned against a pillar with visible impatience. “Someone should be yelling by now,” she said. Kaelen didn’t turn. “They are.” “Then why haven’t they stormed the building yet?” Lucien answered without looking up. “Because neither court wants to be the first to break the neutrality agreement.” Aria snorted. “That agreement is hanging by a thread.” “Precisely,” Lucien replied calmly. The bond pulsed again. Not painfully. But noticeably. Kaelen felt the shift immediately. Lucien paused mid-step. Aria noticed both reactions. “Oh no.” Neither of them spoke. Aria’s eyes widened. “Oh no.” Kaelen exhaled slowly. “What?” Aria pointed between them. “You two just did the thing again.” Lucien tilted his head. “The bond responded.” “Yes,” Aria said flatly. “I noticed.” Kaelen frowned slightly. “This time it felt…” Lucien finished the thought. “Stronger.” Silence settled again. Kaelen’s wolf stirred uneasily. The bond wasn’t just stabilizing. It was growing. A sharp knock echoed through the hall. All three of them turned instantly. Kaelen’s voice hardened. “Enter.” The doors creaked open. A lone vampire stepped inside. Tall. Pale. Dressed in the dark silver uniform of the Crimson Court’s diplomatic guard. Kaelen recognized him immediately. Adrian Thorne. Lucien’s strategist. Aria straightened slightly. “Well,” she muttered. “Here comes trouble.” Adrian walked forward calmly, stopping several paces away. His gaze moved from Kaelen to Lucien. Then briefly to Aria. “You look well,” he said to Lucien. Lucien inclined his head slightly. “Better than expected.” Adrian’s eyes flicked toward Kaelen again. “Yes.” That single word carried more tension than the entire sentence before it. Kaelen stepped forward. “You were not summoned.” “No.” “Then why are you here?” Adrian folded his hands behind his back. “The Crimson Court has made a decision.” Lucien’s eyes sharpened slightly. “That was faster than expected.” Aria sighed. “I knew it.” Kaelen’s voice dropped. “Speak.” Adrian held his gaze. “The Regent believes the bond is a destabilizing threat to vampire sovereignty.” Lucien didn’t react. But the bond pulsed sharply again. Kaelen noticed. “Continue.” Adrian’s voice remained calm. “The Court demands immediate severance.” Aria laughed once. “Good luck with that.” Kaelen ignored her. “And if severance is not possible?” Adrian met Lucien’s eyes directly now. “Then the Omega will be removed.” The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Lucien spoke softly. “Removed.” Adrian did not look away. “Yes.” Kaelen’s claws extended slightly. “You mean executed.” Adrian did not deny it. Silence swallowed the hall. Lucien’s expression remained composed. But Kaelen felt the bond react violently this time. Not pain. Fury. Not from Lucien. From his wolf. “You will not touch him,” Kaelen said quietly. Adrian’s gaze shifted back to him. “That is not your decision.” Kaelen stepped closer. “It is now.” The tension thickened instantly. Aria moved subtly to Kaelen’s side. Lucien spoke before either side could escalate. “Adrian.” Adrian’s attention returned to him. “You delivered the message,” Lucien said calmly. “Now deliver mine.” Adrian waited. Lucien’s voice remained soft. “I refuse.” Aria blinked. “Well that was simple.” Adrian did not look surprised. “I expected as much.” Lucien’s crimson eyes darkened slightly. “The Court intends to kill me.” “They intend to prevent war.” Lucien tilted his head. “By killing their own Omega?” Adrian’s voice remained steady. “By removing the catalyst.” Kaelen’s patience snapped. “The catalyst is the bond.” “Yes.” “And you believe killing him will end it?” Adrian looked directly at him. “We believe it will weaken you.” Kaelen smiled slightly. It was not pleasant. “You are welcome to test that theory.” Lucien watched him carefully. The bond surged again—this time fierce and protective. Adrian noticed the shift too. His expression changed slightly. “Interesting.” Lucien frowned faintly. “What?” Adrian studied them both. “The bond is already affecting his instincts.” Kaelen growled softly. “Enough.” Adrian lifted a hand slightly. “I did not come to fight.” “Then leave.” Adrian’s gaze flicked toward the doors. “That would be wise.” Aria frowned. “Why?” Adrian’s voice lowered. “Because the Regent did not send only a message.” Kaelen’s eyes darkened. “What did he send?” Adrian answered calmly. “Assassins.” The word echoed through the hall. Lucien went still. Aria swore under her breath. “You’re joking.” Adrian shook his head. “They crossed into the valley an hour ago.” Kaelen’s voice dropped to something dangerous. “You waited until now to mention that.” “I was confirming their orders.” Lucien spoke quietly. “And now?” Adrian met his gaze again. “Now I believe they are about to arrive.” As if summoned by the words— A violent crash exploded against the summit hall doors. Wood splintered. Stone shook. The heavy entrance burst inward. Five figures stepped through the dust. Vampires. Black armor. Execution blades. One of them spoke coldly. “Lucien Vale.” Lucien didn’t move. “You are ordered to return to the Crimson Court.” Aria slowly drew her sword. “And if he says no?” The lead assassin’s eyes flicked toward Kaelen. “Then we remove the problem.” Kaelen stepped forward. The bond flared violently. His wolf surged to the surface. Claws extended fully. Eyes burning gold. “You can try.” Behind him, Lucien’s voice remained calm. Almost thoughtful. “Well,” he said softly, “That escalated quickly.”
