CHAPTER 5: WALKING INTO THE UNKNOWN

323 Words
The afternoon sun had begun to mellow as Faye and Jesse walked side by side down the quiet street. The cool breeze lifted Faye’s hair, and for the first time in days, she felt the weight on her shoulders lighten. Jesse was animatedly talking about some random thing that had happened in class—something ridiculous, no doubt—but Faye found herself actually listening, hanging on to his every word. Jesse: (laughing) "And then, I swear, this kid Toby thought I was going to eat his lunch just because I asked if he had any snacks. He got all freaked out and tried to hide his sandwich behind his back. I mean, come on, I’m not that desperate!" Faye laughed, the sound bubbling out of her before she could stop it. She felt a warmth spread through her chest, like she was finally waking up after a long, hard sleep. Faye: (gently) "You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had anyone make me laugh like this before. Not in a long time." Jesse’s face softened as he glanced at her, his grin turning more tender. Jesse stopped walking, turning to face her. His eyes softened, and he reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. Jesse: "Your laugh suits you well. Wear that everyday, and try to be happy." The sincerity in his words struck her deeply. For the first time in a long time, Faye didn’t feel like she had to carry the world on her shoulders alone. She had someone who saw her, not for what others thought of her, but for who she really was. And that was something she hadn’t had in so long. They continued walking, side by side, their footsteps in sync, the world around them fading into the background. For just a moment, Faye allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, things could get better. She didn’t have to face everything alone anymore.
