I don't know how long I was out for but when I woke up I realized that I was no longer in the dark and mysterious cave. I was now out, in the open.
I rose gently to scan the spectacular scenery of ginormous mountains and millions of tall fawn trees, beneath me. The lovely aroma of nature engulfed my body leaving me calmed and relaxed. The sounds of tweeting birds and chattering animals pleased me and the taste of nature's breeze made my tastebuds tingle. Talking about tastebuds, I'm feeling hungry. I thought to myself,
A calming smile stretched across my face tenderly as I braided my hair that flustered ferociously in the wind.
I looked down to notice that my clothes had once again changed. I was now wearing a camouflage tank top and moss-colored cargo pants. I peeked over to see my shoes and I nearly fell over by the horrifying sight. I was on the side of a steep mountain! Literally!
I pounced to my feet trying to cling to a pointed rock. I was standing on a man-made walkway about 11 inches lengthways and its seemed to stretch all the way around the mammoth mountain. The sun snickered mockingly in my face as I clutched onto my life. Tears once again formed up in my eyes but before I could allow my tears to flow I heard the echoing sounds of eagles.
"Oh no, " I whimpered.
The screeches of the distant eagles gave me the chills. I steadily made my way across the mountain. Dragging my feet on the man-made path to move but, little did I know that by doing this thoughtless stunt, I was attracting the eagle's attention.
At last I found the end. But, before I could take one step onto the stone path and into a cave, an eagle flew right at me. The eagle crashed into my back causing me to slip slightly. I gripped the rocks tighter because I knew that if I let go, that would be an endgame for me. I let out a soft groan as I made my way to the end.
I strolled down the stone path that seemed to be endless. My legs trembled in protest as I made my way around the tunnel.
The interior was yet again dark and mysterious. I kept on getting a gut feeling that I was going in, deeper and deeper. I now started to feel dizzy and distressed.
Soon I came to a dead-end with two tunnels beside each other. I looked to my left and noticed a neatly folded paper lying on the ground. I picked it up and it read,
So I suppose you've survived hence you've made it this far. Are you hungry, I'm sure you are. Now complete this challenge and do it right. Choose the tunnel that leads to your stomach's delight, If you fail and choose wrong you will be killed, if not and you choose right this challenge will be fulfilled.
I sat on the cold, stone floor as I took my time to process the poem.
This is no poem. I realized. This is a riddle. But it's pretty clear, choose the right tunnel. One leads to food and the other leads to instant death. Not terrifying at all.
I stood up and looked at them both carefully. They both looked the same, they were both freakishly silent and both, dark and mysterious. At times like this, I would just wish that I was home, in my bedroom, on my laptop reading stories on w*****d, drinking my cool iced beverage in my icy cold room, and snacking on my chocolates and cakes that were in my white oaken drawer. Just the thought of being home, made me crave food even more.
As I stood in the front of the tunnels I felt a drip of water (well I hope it was water) fall onto my small button nose. I rose my right hand to wipe it away and that was when I had noticed that the writing was still on my hands. I analyzed them and that was when I had started to notice slight differences in the writing.
Though it was the same sentence it looked written over, like if it was supposed to mean something. I stared at it long and hard and that was when I had noticed that from the sentence, "see how easy you are to manipulate." the 'r' in 'are', and the 'I', 't' and 'e' in 'manipulate' were all written with a different marker from the other letters.
I then put the letters together and it formed the word 'rite'. This couldn't be that easy, I thought to myself. But then again, if this is a game then this is just level one. Holy crap! I'm so damned.
I then thought, Okay Jane, if I'm correct then this is a game, right? The earlier I accept that, the easier it will be for me to get the hell out of here.
This was a risk I was willing to take, to test my hypothesis.
I took a deep breath and entered the right tunnel.
