The feast hall was more noisy than I recalled. The long banquet tables were filled with musicians and waiters, serving wine and food throughout the large chamber. In the room stood wolves and Lycans in expensive ceremonial costumes, their voices merging into a steady hum of conversation and politics. None of that was important to me. I was facing the hall across from Lucian, and the moment I walked up to that hall next to him, Shadowfang saw me. I knew it on the spot. The shift. The mutterings that were beginning table by table. Eyes turning. Conversations stopping. Shock was like a wildfire moving through the room. Lucian walked with a casual stride by my side as if nothing had happened, his right hand behind his back and his left holding a glass of wine. Controlled. Untouchable
