Elena's Secret
Elena sat across from Lia.
"I worked for Adrian for three years."
Lia listened silently.
"I was young. I thought the organization was simply a group of powerful businessmen protecting their interests."
"You knew they were manipulating people."
"Not at first."
"And my father?"
"He discovered the truth."
"Did you betray him?"
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"Then why did he keep secrets from me?"
"Because he loved you."
Lia looked away.
Elena continued.
"Your father planned to expose Adrian. He collected evidence and prepared copies."
"What happened?"
"Adrian found out."
"How?"
"I don't know."
Matteo spoke.
"Someone inside the Moretti family told him."
Elena nodded.
"Yes."
Lia's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
"We never found out."
Suddenly, the lights went out.
The room fell dark.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Matteo stood.
"Stay here."
Lia followed him.
They reached the hallway.
A window was broken.
Elena gasped.
Someone had entered the house.
Then a voice came from outside.
"Elena."
She froze.
Lia looked at her.
"You know that voice."
Elena whispered:
"Adrian."
The three of them moved toward the front entrance.
But Adrian was gone.
On the ground was a black envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Alessandro Moretti.
Standing beside Adrian.
On the back were two words.
MIDNIGHT.
Matteo frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Elena's face had gone pale.
"It means he's coming."
