The evidence was released.
News spread quickly.
Adrian's network collapsed.
But Lia still had one question.
Why had her father trusted the Romanos?
Vittorio finally told her.
"Your father and I were friends."
Lia stared at him.
"We became enemies only because Adrian wanted us to."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Adrian threatened our families."
Vittorio looked down.
"We both made mistakes."
Lia thought about her father.
"He tried to protect me."
"Yes."
"Even if it meant lying."
"Yes."
Matteo stood beside her.
Lia looked at him.
"And you?"
"What about me?"
"Did you know everything?"
"No."
She studied his face.
He wasn't hiding anything.
For the first time, she believed him.
"Thank you."
Matteo smiled.
"For what?"
"For not giving up."
He shrugged.
"I wasn't going to."
Outside, sirens sounded.
Adrian had been arrested.
The Vale Circle was finished.
But Lia knew something else.
The Moretti family would never be the same.
Neither would the Romanos.
And perhaps that wasn't a bad thing.
