Chapter six
My pregnancy made me to be too lazy, though my mother in law contributed a lot to it. She made it her duty to prepare my meals, Wash my cloths and sometimes, she even save me my food in my room. I often complained to her to let me do some of the things myself but she will insist each time I attempt. I woke up one day early in the morning before her,I did all the necessary things I could do before she is awake. But something happened, and since then she hide all the food ingredients in her room and will luck the kitchen before going to bed, since she could not monitor me all the time. She is now in better position to know if I wanted to do something.
What happened that day really got me and every one at home really scared. It was after I Cook, I took the water I used in washing dishes with to pour inside the sink, just then I had my mother in-laws shouting what happened... What happened.... I was so confused by the way she was shouting, mama what are you talking about? Can't you see? You are bleeding. Just then I checked and I noticed that I was actually bleeding. I dropped the water I was holding in my hands in the floor and sat there while she ran out of the compound looking for who will help with a mobile vehicle that will take me to the hospital, since there's non in our abode. Our fear was that I may lost my child. On arrival at hospital, the doctor checked me and said nothing happened to my child, I felt so relief and a new wave of joy surrounded me immediately. I wonder what Eric might do to me if this child is gone after his several warnings. The doctor warned me and also my mother in-laws that I should avoid carrying a heavy load or do anything stressful at all. He said it may affect my pregnancy if I didn't adhere to instructions given.
Eric came home after work and was told of what happened to me,he was full of bitterness, even though he didn't say a word at that moment.
Later at night, I received query from my husband and vowed not to go against his wishes again. My mother and I will do anything you want, all you needed to do is to voice out what you want and it will be done. Or is my mother complaining? No, I confronted.
I later decided to adhere to my husband as well as doctor's instructions in other to let my child grow in peace while still in my womb. Still it's difficult for me to seat and watch my mother in-laws working while am seated, those who don't know anything about my conditions will think other wise, but I managed and disciplined myself and let things the way they are.
Days later,my mother in-laws became I'll and doctor examined her and said she developed ulcer which resulted to her been stopped of doing hard work or lifting heavy load. She was discharged home the next day. Now we were both in conditions that hindered us from doing hard work, so Eric had to took upon himself some responsibilities which includes cooking and other house chores before going to work in the morning. He had been doing that pending when I will deliver my baby and maybe I will then take over from him.
Not up to a week, his office colleagues started complaining that his late coming is too much, they even threatened to sack him if he don't comply with the rule and regulations that govern the office.
My husband was jobless before we got married, he graduated as one of best student among his set. He graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsuka, he had a second class upper bachelor in civil engineering in the faculty of engineering.
He got his present job through the help of his father old friend at the time of our wedding, the man owned a private company, the man said he offered him the job to enabled him Carter for his family now that he is married.
Eric refused going to work for two days after been warned and when I asked him, he said he can't abandon his pregnant wife and sick mother for work,he will be indirectly asking me to go against doctor's instructions if he go to work since there is no one to help at home.
I advised him to seek for leave in that month instead of not going to work, so that we can look for way forward rather than not going to work, because he may be sacked if he didn't show up for work for more days.
He did as I advised but the result isn't our expectations, reason been that the company had an ongoing contract which is in the supervision of Eric so there will not be someone to do his job in his absent.
Aghata came visiting and was told of our present condition, she volunteer to come everyday to help pending when she will travel to go see her boyfriend. I and Eric appreciated her for her kind gesture and to be good friend who can stand beside me at this tragic moment of ours. The services Aghata render to me was totally beyond what a friend can do to each other,it's was a pure act of love that sometimes siblings can't afford to sacrifice for each other. I felt indebted to her. I pray and wished God to give her such husband that will take a very good care of her and also love her all the days of her. Aghata is my twin sister from a different mother i must say. My mother in-law once said she disagreed when I told her that Aghata was my friend, she insisted that she was my sibling until after our wedding before she believed.
Time came for Aghata to travel to go see her boyfriend, and she was set to leave. I now have no option than to think of employing a house help.
