The day I return to Bray, Kate is off her crutches. She tells me that her leg still hurts and that I’m welcome to ride, but I see right through that. Kate wants to ride her horse again. She also wants me to be happy when she knows I’m going through stuff. But she deserves to ride her horse again.
I don’t want to ride Mirage, anyway. He’s my kind of horse, just like he’s Joey’s—an OTTB. But he isn’t Heartbreak.
It’s hard to describe how I feel about that horse. He’s scarier to me than anyone or anything on so many levels because of what he represents. He’s fearless. He has a fire in his eyes I only dream of having—a fire I will never have again. He makes me jealous, because even though people hurt him like they hurt me, he isn’t scared to fight back. He’s inspirational.
