CHAPTER FOUR: UNRAVELING THREADS

1659 Words
Emma’s alarm buzzed early the next morning, and she groaned as she rolled out of bed. She had barely slept, her thoughts tangled with memories of her interactions with Aiden. She kept telling herself that it didn’t mean anything that it was just a coincidence that they’d spoken again. But no matter how much she tried to convince herself, a small part of her hoped she’d see him again. It was silly, she knew, but there was something about him she couldn’t shake. After a quick breakfast and a few encouraging words to Ethan before he left for school, Emma grabbed her jacket and headed out. She had an early shift at the hotel, and she was determined to focus on her work. She needed to earn as much as she could, especially since Ethan’s college application fees were coming up. She couldn’t afford to be distracted by someone like Aiden Blackwood. But when she walked into the restaurant, she felt a shift in the air. Her manager, Mr. Collins, was pacing by the hostess stand, his face set in a grim expression. The usually bustling atmosphere was tense, and the staff whispered in hushed tones as they went about their tasks. Emma frowned, sensing that something was wrong. “Emma, can I speak with you for a moment?” Mr. Collins called, his voice more serious than usual. Emma felt her stomach twist as she approached. “Of course. Is everything okay?” Mr. Collins led her to a quiet corner away from the eyes of her co-workers. “There was an incident last night. A customer complained about you.” Emma’s heart sank. “What? Who? I don’t remember anything going wrong.” “It’s not clear who they were, but they claimed that you were unprofessional and rude. They said they didn’t want to return because of how you treated them.” Emma’s mind raced. She replayed the events of the previous night, but nothing stood out. She had been polite, as always, and there hadn’t been any issues she could recall. “I swear, Mr. Collins, I didn’t do anything wrong. I always treat the guests with respect.” Mr. Collins sighed, rubbing his temples. “I believe you, Emma. You’ve been nothing but professional since you started working here. But it’s not just about this one complaint. There’s more.” Emma’s frown deepened. “More?” “Someone from corporate came by this morning,” Mr. Collins explained. “They’re conducting an internal investigation. There’s talk that the restaurant is under review, and they mentioned that certain staff members might be let go.” Emma’s heart dropped. “What? Why? We’ve been doing everything right.” Mr. Collins shook his head. “I don’t know. But I need you to be extra careful from now on. They’re looking for any excuse to cut costs or find a reason to shut us down. I know you work hard, Emma, and I don’t want you to lose your job over something you didn’t do.” Emma nodded, though anxiety nagged at her. She had always worked diligently, and the idea of losing her job over a false complaint was terrifying. If the restaurant closed or if she was let go, she didn’t know how she would manage. Everything she had worked for, everything she had promised Ethan depended on her staying employed. “Thanks for telling me, Mr. Collins. I’ll be extra careful,” Emma said, trying to keep her voice steady. Mr. Collins offered a tight smile. “I know you will. Just keep your head down, and hopefully, this will all blow over.” As Emma returned to the dining area, she felt the weight of the situation pressing down on her. She moved through her shift, hyper-aware of her every action, making sure to smile and greet every guest with warmth. But underneath the surface, the fear boiled. She knew how fragile her situation was. If she lost this job, everything she had worked for would be at risk. Midway through her shift, Emma saw Aiden walk in, his presence commanding as always. He glanced around the restaurant, and when his eyes met hers, she felt a flutter of nerves. She hadn’t expected to see him so soon, and a part of her wondered if he had come looking for her. He took his usual seat at the corner booth, and Emma’s heart raced. She wasn’t sure if she should approach him, but before she could decide, he gestured for her to come over. Swallowing her nerves, she made her way to his table, determined to keep things professional. “Good morning, Mr. Blackwood. Can I get you your usual coffee?” she asked, her tone polite. Aiden nodded, but his eyes didn’t leave hers. “Yes, please. And sit for a moment, if you don’t mind.” Emma hesitated. “I’m not sure if …” “Just for a minute,” Aiden insisted, his tone softening. “I wanted to check in.” Emma glanced around, noting that the restaurant was still relatively quiet. She carefully lowered herself into the seat across from him, her hands resting nervously in her lap. “Is everything all right?” Aiden’s expression was serious. “I heard about the complaint against you.” Emma’s eyes widened. “How…how did you know?” He shrugged, a hint of a smile playing at the corner of his lips. “I have connections. People tell me things.” Then his expression sobered. “I don’t believe it for a second, though. I know you’re professional.” Emma felt a rush of gratitude, but also confusion. “I don’t understand. Why would someone lie about that?” “There are people who like to stir trouble, Emma. And sometimes, it’s not about you,it’s about the bigger picture,” Aiden said, his eyes darkening. “I have a feeling that this is part of something larger.” Emma frowned, her confusion growing. “What do you mean?” He leaned forward, his voice dropping. “There’s a chance that the complaint was planned, not just to target you, but to sabotage the business here. It could be part of a plan to make the restaurant look bad and force it to shut down.” Emma’s heart raced as his words sank in. “Why would anyone want to do that?” Aiden’s expression hardened. “There are people who play dirty in the business world, Emma. They see an opportunity, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get what they want.” She thought back to the argument she had witnessed between Aiden and Jack Kingston. Was this connected? “Is this about the man you argued with the other night?” Aiden’s eyes narrowed, a flash of surprise crossing his face. “You remember that?” Emma nodded. “I wasn’t eavesdropping, I promise. I just happened to be nearby.” Aiden let out a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. “It could be connected. Jack Kingston has been trying to undercut my projects for years. If he’s found a way to sabotage this place, he’ll do it.” Emma felt a chill run down her spine. “So, what do we do?” Aiden’s gaze locked onto hers, and for a moment, she felt the intensity of his focus. “We’re not going to let him win. But I need you to be careful, Emma. If he’s targeting the staff, you could be at risk.” Emma’s heart pounded in her chest. “I’ll do whatever I can to help.” Aiden’s expression softened. “I appreciate that. But for now, just keep your eyes open. If you notice anything unusual, anything that doesn’t seem right, let me know.” Emma nodded, feeling a surge of determination. She didn’t know why Aiden was involving her in this, but she was glad he trusted her. “I will.” As she rose to leave, Aiden reached out, his hand brushing hers for a brief moment. “Thank you, Emma. And remember, you’re not alone in this.” His words stayed with her as she continued her shift, her mind buzzing with questions and possibilities. She knew she was getting involved in something far beyond her usual responsibilities, but she couldn’t ignore the feeling that she was meant to help. Later that evening, as Emma closed up the restaurant, she replayed her conversation with Aiden. The thought of Jack Kingston and his schemes made her uneasy, but she was also determined to prove herself. She needed this job, and if there was a way to protect it, she was willing to do whatever it took. As she gathered her things, she heard a noise coming from the back hallway near the storage area. Her body tensed. It was unusual for anyone to be back there after closing time. She paused, straining her ears to listen. Another faint noise like the sound of something being moved, echoed down the hall. Emma’s grip tightened on her bag. She knew she should leave and let security handle it, but a sense of curiosity and determination pushed her forward. She tiptoed down the hall, the shadows from the dim lights casting eerie shapes on the walls. Her heart raced as she turned the corner, peering into the storage area. Her breath caught in her throat. She saw a figure, partially obscured by the darkness, rifling through a stack of papers. The person seemed focused, unaware of her presence. Emma felt a jolt of fear, but before she could react, the figure turned and their eyes locked onto hers. It was Luke. Emma’s heart pounded as a cold sweat broke out on her skin. “Luke, what are you doing here?” Luke s traightened, his face twisting into a mix of guilt and annoyance. “Emma, it’s not what it looks like.”
