Chapter 2: The Letterbox
The rain had just started falling when Sienna pulled up in front of Caleb's house. She hadn't been there since the night before the accident. Everything looked exactly the same—the neat little porch, the wind chime that barely moved, and the flower pots still holding onto the last of their summer colors. But the house felt different now. Empty. Quiet in the worst kind of way.
Sienna sat in her car for a moment, her hands still on the steering wheel. She was afraid. Not of the house, but of what she might find inside. Caleb was gone, and every inch of that house was filled with memories of him. The laughter, the fights, the dreams they had spoken about late into the night. She wasn't sure she was ready to face it all. But she had to. Caleb had left something for her. Something important.
She stepped out of the car, pulling her coat tightly around her. The drizzle soaked through her hair as she walked to the front door. She still had the key he never asked for it back. Her hand shook as she slid it into the lock and turned it.
The door creaked open, and Sienna stepped inside.
The air was still. Too still. The kind of stillness that makes you hold your breath. Her boots echoed softly on the wooden floor as she walked through the hallway. Pictures lined the walls—Caleb with his crooked smile, one of the three of them at the beach, arms slung around each other like nothing could ever tear them apart.
She entered the living room and froze.
There it was. The letterbox.
A small wooden box sat on the coffee table, perfectly placed. Like it had been waiting. Her eyes filled with tears when she saw her name written in Caleb’s handwriting on a folded piece of paper taped to the top.
"Sienna & Landon Open Together."
Landon.
The name hit her like a slap. She hadn’t seen or spoken to Landon since the fight. Since they both said things they couldn’t take back. Since they broke Caleb’s heart more than they had ever broken each other's.
Sienna reached out and touched the box gently, like it might disappear. Her fingers trembled as she lifted it. It wasn’t heavy, but it felt like it carried the weight of a thousand memories.
She sat on the couch and placed the box on her lap. Her thumb brushed over the tape. She wanted to rip it open. She wanted to know what Caleb had written. But the words kept ringing in her mind "Open Together."
Could she really call Landon? After everything?
She stared at her phone for a long time.
Then, finally, with a deep breath and a heart full of hesitation, she typed out the message.
“I went to Caleb’s. There’s something he left for us. A box. It says to open it together. Please come.”
She hit send before she could change her mind.
The waiting was torture. She sat in the silence, staring at the box. She didn’t cry. Not yet. She was holding herself together by a thread.
An hour passed.
Then came a knock on the door, She opened it slowly.
Landon stood there, drenched from the rain, hair clinging to his forehead, eyes filled withsomething between anger and sorrow.
They stared at each other for a long moment. No words. Just silence and years of unspoken pain.
Finally, he nodded.
She stepped aside, and he walked in.
Without speaking, they sat across from each other, the box between them.
Sienna peeled the tape off slowly and lifted the lid.
Inside were three letters, One labeled “Sienna.”
One labeled “Landon. And one labeled “Together.”
She looked up at him. He met her gaze. They both took their letters and began to read.
Caleb’s handwriting danced across the page.
"Sienna,
If you're reading this, then I’m no longer here. And that breaks my heart, because I wanted to stay. More than anything, I wanted to stay. But life had other plans. And I need you to know that none of this was your fault. You were my best friend. You were my home. Even when things got messy.
I know you and Landon haven’t spoken. I know what happened. I saw it all—felt the tension, the silence, the pain. And I never said anything because I hoped you two would figure it out on your own. But now I need you to. I need you both to find your way back—not for me, but for yourselves.
Please open the last letter together. And try to forgive each other. That’s all I ever wanted—for my two favorite people to find peace.
Love, Caleb, Sienna wiped her eyes. She hadn’t even realized she was crying.
Landon read his letter in silence. His face was unreadable, but his hands trembled.
They looked at each other again.
Then Sienna reached for the last letter, She unfolded it and began to read out loud.
Sienna and Landon,
You’re sitting together. That means a lot to me. You both meant everything to me. And the thought of you two drifting apart because of mistakes and misunderstandings breaks my heart more than dying ever could.
So, I’m giving you something
A second chance.
In this box are ten envelopes. Each one has a task, a place, or a memory inside it. I want you to go through them together. One by one. Like a little adventure. Like we used to.
You don’t have to love each other. You don’t even have to like each other. But I’m asking you to try. For me. For the us that once was.
Maybe, just maybe, in trying, you’ll find something you thought you’d lost.
Love always, Caleb."*
Sienna looked at the box again. Under the letters, ten smaller envelopes were stacked neatly.
She picked up the first one. On the front, in Caleb’s familiar scrawl, it read:
Envelope 1: Go back to where it all started.”She looked up at Landon.
He met her eyes.
And for the first time in what felt like forever, they both smiled.
Not because the pain had vanished.
But because, maybe, just maybe, healing had begun.
