The prophecy

924 Words
"Who's awake?" My voice echoed through the silent forest. Nobody answered. Kael. Shadow Fang. The mysterious old man. All three stared toward the northern horizon. As if expecting something terrible to appear. The unease in my chest deepened. "Can someone explain what's happening?" The old man finally looked at me. The smile from earlier was gone. Now he seemed... tired. As though he had spent years dreading this moment. "Perhaps it's time." Kael immediately disagreed. "No." The old man's silver eyes narrowed. "She deserves the truth." "Not here." Kael glanced around the forest. The destroyed battlefield. The surviving rogues. The dozens of listening ears. His point was valid. Shadow Fang unexpectedly laughed. "Still trying to protect her from reality?" Kael's growl shook the trees. The rogue leader simply smirked. I had enough. "Stop." All three men looked at me. Good. Because I was tired of being treated like a child. "Tired of what?" Kael asked quietly. "Tired of everyone talking around me." The frustration I had been carrying for days finally erupted. "My pack hid things from me." "Elder Rowan hid things from me." "Now all of you are doing the same thing." I pointed at the pendant around my neck. "People keep saying I'm important." "Special." "The heir." "Then tell me why." Silence followed. The old man sighed. A very long sigh. Then he nodded. "Very well." Kael looked unhappy. Shadow Fang looked interested. I simply waited. The old man walked toward a fallen tree and sat down. For a moment he seemed lost in thought. Remembering. Then he began. "Over a thousand years ago, before the Lycan Kingdom existed, the werewolf world was ruled by seven royal bloodlines." I frowned. I'd never heard of that. The old man wasn't surprised. "Most records were destroyed." "Why?" "Because six of those bloodlines vanished." A chill ran through me. Vanished. Not defeated. Not conquered. Vanished. The old man's gaze met mine. "The seventh survived." My pulse quickened. Somehow I already knew where this was going. "The Moonborn Bloodline." The pendant suddenly felt heavier around my neck. The old man noticed. His eyes softened. "They were different from ordinary werewolves." "How?" This time, Kael answered. "They could channel moon energy directly." I blinked. Moon energy? That sounded impossible. Then again, silver light had just exploded from my body and thrown wolves across a forest. Maybe impossible wasn't the right word anymore. The old man nodded. "The Moonborn were blessed by the Moon Goddess herself." His voice lowered. "They produced warriors capable of changing the course of wars." A memory flashed through my mind. The vision from the pendant. The warriors kneeling beneath the moon. The silver-eyed woman. The old man continued. "For centuries, the Moonborn protected the werewolf world." "Then came the betrayal." The atmosphere changed. Even the wind seemed to listen. Shadow Fang's smile disappeared. Kael's jaw tightened. The old man stared into the darkness. "Someone wanted their power." "Who?" The answer came from Kael. "The First King." I frowned. "The first Lycan King?" Kael nodded once. The old man continued. "He united the kingdoms." "He conquered enemies." "He created an empire." Then his expression darkened. "But he wanted more." A bad feeling settled in my stomach. The old man looked directly at me. "He wanted immortality." The word sent chills through me. Immortality. No wonder things had gone wrong. "To achieve it," the old man said, "he hunted the Moonborn." My chest tightened. "No." "Yes." The sadness in his voice felt genuine. "Entire families were slaughtered." My hands clenched. "The survivors disappeared." The old man pointed at me. "Until now." The forest became silent. I stared at him. Unable to process everything. "You're saying..." The words caught in my throat. The old man nodded. "You are the last known descendant of the Moonborn Bloodline." The world tilted. Me? The forgotten omega? The rejected mate? The girl nobody wanted? Impossible. Absolutely impossible. Yet deep inside... Something resonated with the truth. As though my soul already knew. As though my blood recognized it. My wolf spoke softly. We've always known. I nearly jumped. "You knew?" Not everything. She sounded apologetic. Only that we were different. Before I could respond, Shadow Fang crossed his arms. "Tell her the rest." The old man became silent. A shadow crossed his face. The reaction worried me. "What rest?" Nobody answered. My stomach dropped. There was more. Of course there was more. There was always more. Finally, Kael stepped forward. The firelight reflected in his golden eyes. His gaze locked onto mine. Serious. Steady. Almost reluctant. "The prophecy." My pulse quickened. The same prophecy Elder Rowan had mentioned. The one everyone seemed afraid of. "What prophecy?" Kael's expression hardened. Then he recited words that sounded ancient. Words that sent chills through my entire body. «"When moonlight walks among wolves once more, The forgotten heir shall awaken. Kingdoms shall rise. Kingdoms shall fall. The sleeping king shall return. And only the Daughter of the Moon Shall decide the fate of all."» The moment he finished speaking, silence fell. My heartbeat thundered in my ears. The Daughter of the Moon. The forgotten heir. The prophecy was talking about me. It had to be. I opened my mouth. Then froze. Because I felt something. A presence. Watching. Ancient. Hungry. Far away. Yet somehow aware of me. A whisper brushed against my mind. Soft. Male. Dangerous. I found you. My blood ran cold. The voice wasn't in the forest. It wasn't nearby. It was inside my head. And whoever it belonged to... Sounded very pleased.
