Chapter 1: The Scholarship Student

699 Words
The gates of Haneul Academy stood taller than anything Yoon Ha-eun had never seen. Black iron bars stretched toward the sky, decorated with silver patterns that sparkled beneath the morning sun. Beyond them stood enormous buildings made of white stone and glass. The academy looked more like a university for royalty than a school for teenagers. Luxury cars lined the entrance. Students stepped out wearing expensive watches, designer shoes, and perfectly tailored uniforms. Ha-eun tightened her grip on the straps of her backpack. Unlike everyone around her, she had arrived by bus. Her uniform was neat but old. The sleeves had been carefully repaired. Her shoes had been polished so many times that the leather looked worn. She lowered her eyes and walked through the gates. A few students glanced at her. Then another. Then more. Whispers followed her almost immediately. "Who's that?" "I heard she's a scholarship student." "Really?" "She doesn't look like she belongs here." Ha-eun pretended not to hear. She had expected this. People always judged what they saw first. Money. Clothes. Status. She had spent years learning that lesson. The main building towered over her as she entered. Everything inside seemed perfect. Marble floors. Golden decorations. Glass display cases filled with trophies. The academy's achievements were proudly displayed everywhere. Academic championships. Sports awards. International recognition. The school was famous throughout the country. Students dreamed of attending. Parents fought for admission. And now she was here. She should have been happy. Instead, she felt like an outsider. The classroom for Class 2-A was located on the third floor. As she approached, her heartbeat quickened. A teacher greeted her at the door. "You must be Yoon Ha-eun." "Yes, ma'am." The teacher smiled politely. "Come in." The conversation inside the classroom stopped immediately. Dozens of eyes turned toward her. Ha-eun felt every stare. The teacher wrote her name on the board. "Class, this is your new classmate, Yoon Ha-eun. She earned one of the academy's most competitive scholarships." For a moment, silence filled the room. Then a few students began clapping politely. Others didn't bother. Ha-eun bowed. "Nice to meet you." The teacher pointed toward an empty seat near the back. "You can sit there." She walked quietly to her desk. As she sat down, she noticed several students staring openly. Some looked curious. Others looked amused. A few looked annoyed. One student in particular caught her attention. A tall boy sitting near the center of the room. Everyone around him seemed focused on him. Even the teacher occasionally glanced his way. His name, she later learned, was Kang Min-jun. The most popular student in the academy. The son of a powerful business executive. Handsome. Confident. Respected. Feared. When their eyes briefly met, he offered a faint smile. Something about that smile made her uncomfortable. The first lesson began. Ha-eun focused on taking notes. Studying had always been easy for her. People were much harder to understand. Hours passed. Classes changed. Teachers came and went. By lunchtime, she was exhausted. The cafeteria was enormous. Hundreds of students filled the room. Laughter echoed everywhere. Groups formed naturally. Friends sat together. Athletes gathered around certain tables. Honor students gathered around others. Ha-eun stood alone holding her tray. There was nowhere for her to sit. She searched the room. Every seat seemed occupied. Then she noticed an empty chair near the corner. Beside a trash bin. She walked over and sat down. The sounds of conversation continued around her. Nobody joined her. Nobody spoke to her. She ate quietly. Across the cafeteria, a group of students watched. At the center sat Kang Min-jun. "What do you think?" one of his friends asked. "The scholarship girl?" Min-jun replied. His friend nodded. Min-jun leaned back. "Interesting." The others laughed. "She looks terrified." "She probably is." "Do you think she'll last the semester?" Min-jun watched Ha-eun for another moment. Then he smiled. "We'll see." At the far corner of the cafeteria, Ha-eun suddenly felt as if someone was watching her. She looked up. For a brief moment, her eyes met Min-jun's. Then he looked away. The feeling remained. Something told her that her first day had only been the beginning. And she wasn't wrong.
