Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Mask

1398 Words
The gunshot echoed through the stairwell. Lena stopped running. Every instinct screamed at her to keep moving. Instead, she turned. The old maintenance worker had just risked his life for her. She couldn't simply leave him. Her fingers tightened around the flash drive. "No..." She whispered. "I'm not doing this again." Before fear could stop her, Lena ran back down the stairs. Archive B12 was in chaos. One metal shelf had collapsed. Papers littered the floor like snow. The emergency lights flickered weakly. "Hello?" Her voice shook. No answer. She stepped carefully around the fallen shelves. Then she saw him. The maintenance worker lay against a cabinet, one hand pressed to his shoulder. Blood seeped between his fingers. He was alive. Barely. "You came back," he said with a tired smile. "You told me to leave." "I lied." Lena dropped to her knees. "We need an ambulance." "No." He grabbed her wrist. "Listen to me." His voice was growing weaker. "You don't have much time." She fought back tears. "Please..." "The flash drive." She nodded. "I have it." "Good." He closed his eyes for a second before continuing. "Don't open it." She frowned. "What?" "Not yet." "Why?" "Because once you know what's inside..." "...you'll never be able to pretend your life is normal again." Heavy footsteps echoed somewhere deeper in the archive. Someone was coming back. The old man heard them too. "Go." "I'm not leaving you." "You have to." "Lena." His voice was barely above a whisper now. "If Adrian asks..." "...tell him..." He stopped. His breathing became uneven. "Tell him..." A shadow appeared at the end of the aisle. The old man's eyes widened. "RUN!" Lena didn't think. She ran. At that exact moment... The archive doors burst open. "Security!" Adrian's voice thundered through the room. "Lena!" She froze. Relief washed over her. "Adrian!" He crossed the room in seconds. The moment he reached her, his hands gripped her shoulders. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head. "I'm fine." His eyes searched her face, checking for injuries she hadn't even noticed. Only after he was certain she was safe did he step back. "What happened?" She looked toward the maintenance worker. "He..." Her words caught in her throat. The space beside the cabinet was empty. No man. No blood. Nothing. Only a single flashlight lying on the floor. Lena stared in disbelief. "No..." "He was right there." Adrian looked at the empty space. "Lena." "I swear." "He was here." Marcus and two security officers searched every corner of the archive. Nothing. It was as if the man had never existed. Back in Adrian's office... A doctor finished examining Lena. "Minor cuts." "Nothing serious." The doctor smiled reassuringly. "Get some rest." After he left, silence settled over the room. Adrian poured a glass of water and placed it in front of Lena. She noticed something unusual. His hand trembled. Only slightly. But enough for her to see. "You were worried." The words slipped out before she could stop them. Adrian didn't answer immediately. Finally, he said quietly, "I don't like losing people." It was such a simple sentence. Yet it carried years of pain. Lena looked at him differently. Not as the untouchable CEO. Not as the cold billionaire. But as a man carrying something he had never put down. Before she could respond— Marcus entered without knocking. His face was pale. "Sir..." Adrian turned. "What is it?" Marcus swallowed. "We found the security footage." "And?" Marcus placed a tablet on the desk. "The cameras never stopped recording." Adrian frowned. "Then why were six minutes missing?" Marcus tapped the screen. "They weren't deleted." He looked directly at Adrian. "They were replaced." "With footage from three years ago." The room fell silent. Marcus pressed play. The grainy video showed Archive B12. A young woman stepped into view. She was carrying a file. She looked frightened. Lena leaned closer. "That's..." Adrian finished the sentence for her. "Evelyn." Then the video froze. Not because of a technical fault. Because Evelyn had suddenly turned... ...and looked directly into the security camera. As if she knew someone in the future would be watching. Then she mouthed three words. Adrian's face lost all color. Because he understood exactly what she had said. The room fell silent. Marcus stared at the frozen frame. Lena looked from the screen to Adrian. "What did she say?" Adrian didn't answer. His eyes remained fixed on Evelyn's face. For a moment... He wasn't the CEO of Wolfe Empire. He looked like a man reliving the worst night of his life. "Sir?" Marcus asked quietly. Adrian pressed the pause button. His voice came out low. "Leave us." Marcus hesitated. "But—" "That's an order." Marcus nodded once and walked out, closing the door behind him. --- Lena waited. She had learned something about Adrian over the past week. If she pushed him... He would shut down. So she said nothing. Several long seconds passed. Finally, Adrian spoke. "Evelyn wasn't just my assistant." Lena looked up. "She was the only person in this company who challenged me." A faint smile crossed his face. "She used to tell me I worked too much." "What did you tell her?" "That she talked too much." Lena couldn't help smiling. "I guess neither of you listened." "No." For the first time... Adrian actually laughed. It was quiet. Short. But real. The laugh disappeared as quickly as it came. "So..." Lena asked gently. "What happened?" Adrian walked toward the window. "The night she disappeared..." "...she called me." His shoulders tensed. "I ignored the call." Silence. "I was in another meeting." "When I called back..." "No one answered." He lowered his head. "I haven't forgiven myself since." Lena didn't know what to say. Some wounds didn't need advice. They only needed someone willing to hear them. --- "The three words..." Lena said softly. "What were they?" Adrian closed his eyes. "'Don't trust him.'" The words hung between them. Lena frowned. "Him?" "I don't know." "You've never figured it out?" Adrian shook his head. "Evelyn died..." He stopped himself. Then corrected it. "Evelyn disappeared before she could explain." Lena noticed it. He still couldn't bring himself to believe she was dead. --- A soft knock interrupted them. Victoria stepped inside. She looked at Adrian first. Then Lena. "The board has called an emergency meeting." Adrian frowned. "About what?" Victoria placed a sealed envelope on his desk. "It arrived this morning." "There was no sender." Adrian opened it. Inside... A single sheet of paper. Typed in bold black letters. The next one disappears tonight. No signature. Nothing else. Lena felt her stomach tighten. "That's a threat." "No," Adrian said quietly. "It's a promise." --- That evening... Most employees left early after hearing rumors of the emergency meeting. Only a handful remained. Lena packed her bag. She was about to leave when Ethan appeared. "You heading home?" She nodded. "I'll walk you to your car." "I don't have one." He blinked. "Oh." She laughed. "I take the bus." "Then I'll walk you to the bus stop." "You don't have to." "My wife says never let a friend walk home alone after dark." Lena smiled. "Your wife gives a lot of advice." "She does." "And I've learned that ignoring her usually ends badly." They both laughed as they stepped outside. Across the street... Inside a parked black sedan... Someone lowered a pair of binoculars. "They're leaving." The voice on the phone remained calm. "Which one?" "The assistant." A pause. "What about Wolfe?" "Still inside." The caller gave one simple instruction. "Then don't touch her." Another pause. "Not yet." The line went dead. --- Back in his office... Adrian stood alone. The building was almost empty. He unlocked the bottom drawer of his desk. Inside... Beside Evelyn's old employee badge... Lay another photograph. One that Lena had never seen. It showed three people standing together. Adrian. Evelyn. And a young woman with Lena's unmistakable eyes. Adrian stared at the picture for a long time. Then whispered words no one else was there to hear. "I promised I'd protect her." A sudden knock broke the silence. Three slow knocks. One final knock. The exact pattern. Adrian's expression hardened. He opened the office door. No one was there. Only a small envelope on the floor. Inside was a single sentence. You failed once. Don't fail her too.
