Chapter 6: The Truth Has a Price

1082 Words
The key card felt heavier than it should have. Lena stared at it as the elevator doors closed behind the last employee. Archive Room B12. 11:30 p.m. Come alone. Her phone vibrated again. Adrian: Where are you? She typed a reply. Still organizing tomorrow's schedule. She looked at the message. Then deleted it. Another attempt. I'm just leaving now. Delete. She sighed. Why was lying to him suddenly so difficult? At exactly 11:18 p.m., she made her decision. She slipped the key card into her pocket. "I'm just looking," she whispered to herself. "I'm not trusting anyone." --- The lower levels of Wolfe Empire felt completely different at night. Gone were the polished conversations and ringing phones. Only the faint hum of fluorescent lights echoed through the empty corridors. The sign above a steel door read: ARCHIVE B12 Lena slid the key card through the scanner. A green light flashed. The door unlocked. Inside... Rows upon rows of filing shelves stretched into the darkness. Dust floated lazily through the beam of a single emergency light. Someone had already been there. One drawer stood open. A folder rested neatly on a metal table. Waiting. Her heartbeat quickened. She approached carefully. Across the cover, someone had written one word. EVELYN Lena slowly opened it. The first page contained Evelyn's employee profile. Age. Position. Performance reviews. Everything appeared ordinary. Until the last page. There was no resignation letter. No termination notice. Instead, a red stamp covered the bottom. STATUS: MISSING Lena's throat tightened. Missing. Not resigned. Not transferred. Missing. She turned the page. A photograph slipped onto the floor. It showed Evelyn standing beside Adrian at a charity gala. Unlike the photo she'd seen earlier... Neither of them was smiling. They looked frightened. As if someone had taken the picture at exactly the wrong moment. Then... A voice broke the silence. "I was wondering if you'd come." Lena spun around. A man stepped from the shadows. It wasn't Daniel Cross. It wasn't Marcus. It wasn't Ethan. He looked to be in his fifties, dressed in an ordinary maintenance uniform, holding a flashlight in one hand. "You shouldn't be here," Lena whispered. The man smiled sadly. "Neither should you." He glanced toward the file in her hands. "Evelyn asked the same questions you're asking now." Lena's grip tightened. "You knew her?" "I tried to save her." Silence. "Who are you?" The man's eyes drifted toward the security camera mounted above the archive door. Then back to Lena. "My name doesn't matter." "What matters..." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "...is that Adrian Wolfe has been searching for the wrong enemy." Lena frowned. "What does that mean?" Before the man could answer— Every light inside the archive went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Then... A loud metallic clang echoed somewhere behind the shelves. The man grabbed Lena's wrist. "Run." She didn't argue. Together, they disappeared into the darkness... While, somewhere beyond the shelves... Someone else began walking toward them. Slow. Steady. Patient. "Run." Lena didn't hesitate. The maintenance worker pulled her behind a row of towering archive shelves just as heavy footsteps echoed through the darkness. Someone was inside Archive B12. Someone who hadn't made a sound until now. The emergency lights flickered once... Then died completely. Only the pale glow of the EXIT sign painted the room in dull green. "Who is that?" Lena whispered. The old man pressed a finger to his lips. "Listen." The footsteps were slow. Measured. Not searching. Approaching. As though whoever it was already knew exactly where they were hiding. Lena's heartbeat pounded in her ears. The man leaned close. "If anything happens..." "You leave." "What about you?" He smiled sadly. "I've had more time than you." Before Lena could answer— A flashlight beam swept across the aisle. Both of them ducked. The light lingered for a second... Then moved on. The old man quietly reached into his pocket and slipped a small silver flash drive into Lena's hand. She frowned. "What is this?" "The reason Evelyn disappeared." Her breath caught. "Take it." "I don't understand." "You don't have to." "You just have to keep it away from them." "Them?" Lena whispered. The man's face hardened. "They're closer than Adrian realizes." --- A loud crash echoed from the opposite side of the archive. Metal shelves rattled violently. Someone was overturning them. The old man's expression changed. "They've found us." He gently pushed Lena toward a narrow service corridor. "Go." "I'm not leaving you." "You don't have a choice." "But—" "Lena." His voice was firm now. "If they catch you with that drive..." "They won't ask questions." "They'll erase you." The words froze her in place. For a brief second... She saw genuine fear in his eyes. Not for himself. For her. Reluctantly, she turned and ran. --- The service corridor led to an emergency staircase. She had barely reached the second landing when voices echoed below. "Search every floor." "She couldn't have gone far." Her grip tightened around the flash drive. Who were these people? They didn't sound like ordinary security guards. They sounded... Organized. Trained. She climbed faster. --- Meanwhile... On the executive floor... Adrian stared at Lena's empty desk. Her bag was gone. Her laptop was still open. He looked at the digital clock. 11:42 p.m. She should have answered his messages by now. His phone buzzed. Marcus Reid. "I've checked every camera." "And?" "There are six minutes missing." Adrian looked up sharply. "Missing?" "Someone deleted them." Silence. Marcus continued. "The last place Lena was seen..." "...was heading toward the archive level." Adrian was already moving. "Seal the building." --- Back inside Archive B12... The old maintenance worker slowly stepped into the open. The flashlight beam settled on his face. "So..." A familiar voice echoed through the darkness. "It really is you." The old man closed his eyes briefly. "I was hoping you'd never come back." The figure stepped forward. Still hidden by the shadows. "You've protected Wolfe long enough." "And now..." "...you've chosen her." A gun clicked. The old man didn't flinch. "If you're going to shoot..." "Do it." A deafening bang shattered the silence. --- Lena stopped halfway up the stairs. The sound echoed through the concrete walls. Her knees weakened. Tears blurred her vision. "No..." She whispered. The flash drive felt impossibly heavy inside her trembling hand. At that exact moment... Her phone vibrated. One new message. Unknown Number Don't trust Adrian. He's about to lie to you.
