Chapter 2: The Offer She Should Have Refused

668 Words
Lena didn't remember leaving Wolfe Empire. One moment she was standing in the lobby, staring at the towering building she'd sworn she'd never step into again. The next, she was outside in the rain, her umbrella forgotten beneath one arm while the cold wind whipped strands of hair across her face. Her phone vibrated. Unknown Number You got in. Good. Stay close to Adrian Wolfe. Whatever happens... Don't let him discover who you really are. Her heartbeat slowed. The message disappeared before she could take a screenshot. She frowned. "What the..." She checked her message history. Nothing. Gone. A bus horn snapped her back to reality. People brushed past her as if nothing unusual had happened. Maybe she'd imagined it. No. She knew what she'd seen. --- By the time Lena reached her apartment building, dusk had settled over the city. The landlord was waiting outside. Mr. Briggs folded his arms the moment he saw her. "I've been looking for you." Lena forced a smile. "I can explain." "You've had three weeks to explain." He handed her a folded notice. "You have forty-eight hours." Her chest tightened. "I'm starting a new job." "I've heard that before." "This time it's true." He looked at her for a long moment before sighing. "I hope it is." He walked away. Lena remained rooted to the spot, staring at the paper in her trembling hands. Forty-eight hours. That was all she had left. --- Across the city... Adrian Wolfe stood in the executive boardroom. Twelve directors sat around the polished table. No one spoke. No one dared. The silence broke only when Adrian tossed a thick file onto the table. "Our payroll system has been bleeding money for nearly four years." Several executives exchanged nervous glances. "Our auditors missed it." "Our finance department missed it." His icy gaze swept across the room. "A woman who wasn't even employed here found it in less than five minutes." The room fell silent again. One director finally cleared his throat. "Sir... perhaps it was simply luck." Adrian looked at him. "If incompetence is your definition of luck, you should resign." The man immediately lowered his eyes. "Find out who approved every payroll report connected to this discrepancy." "Yes, sir." "And don't tell anyone we're investigating." The directors nodded. They knew that tone. Someone's career was about to end. Or something far worse. --- The following morning... Lena stood outside Wolfe Empire once again. She adjusted the borrowed blazer she'd bought from a thrift store. It was slightly too big. The sleeves hung past her wrists. She pulled them back nervously. "You belong here," she whispered to herself. A lie. But one she desperately wanted to believe. The revolving doors opened. Every employee inside seemed perfectly polished. Confident. Successful. She suddenly became painfully aware of the cheap shoes on her feet. Don't think about it. Just survive today. She stepped inside. Almost immediately, she bumped into someone. Coffee splashed across an expensive grey suit. Silence. Lena closed her eyes. Please... Not today. "I'm so sorry." The man looked down at the stain before smiling. "It's only coffee." She blinked. "You... aren't angry?" "My wife says life is too short to argue over dry cleaning." He extended a hand. "Ethan Brooks." "Lena." "New employee?" She nodded. "First day." He smiled warmly. "Relax." "I look that nervous?" "You look like you're planning your escape." For the first time that morning... Lena laughed. She didn't notice Adrian watching from the second-floor balcony. His expression remained unreadable. Beside him, his assistant spoke carefully. "Should I introduce them, sir?" Adrian's eyes followed Lena as she disappeared toward the elevators. "No." "Why not?" "I want to know who she is when no one knows I'm watching." His assistant hesitated. "Sir..." "The background check." "It came back clean." Adrian didn't answer. Because something about Lena Hart refused to fit neatly into a file. And Adrian Wolfe had learned long ago... When the facts looked perfect— Someone was lying. End of Chapter 2
