Chapter 12: The Cost of Trust

562 Words
The hidden chamber was silent. No one spoke after Grace's final words. The White Rose. An organization. Not a person. Not a warning. A family of secrets. Lena looked at Grace. "Why now?" Grace met her eyes. "Because they're no longer hiding." "They're hunting." Marcus folded his arms. "If they've stolen Lena's employee file..." "They know exactly who she is." "They always have," Grace replied quietly. Lena's heartbeat slowed. "...What?" Grace looked away. "They knew about you before you were born." Silence. Lena searched Adrian's face. He looked just as shocked. That terrified her even more. Grace placed the journal into Adrian's hands. "You need to read everything." "But not here." She turned toward the staircase. "This room isn't safe anymore." Adrian frowned. "How do you know?" Grace smiled sadly. "Because..." "...I wasn't the only one who knew this place existed." They left the hidden chamber through the narrow staircase. By the time they reached the executive floor... Firefighters had already extinguished the blaze. The archives were soaked. Blackened paper covered the floor. Richard Hayes stood near the entrance, speaking with investigators. The moment he noticed Grace... His face went pale. "You..." Grace stopped walking. "It's been a long time, Richard." He swallowed hard. "I watched your funeral." "So did everyone else." For a brief second... Lena noticed something strange. Richard wasn't surprised. He looked... Afraid. Later that evening... Adrian remained in his office. The leather journal rested unopened on his desk. Lena stood by the window. Neither of them spoke. Finally... "You should go home," Adrian said. She turned. "And leave you here alone?" "You've had enough for one day." "So have you." Their eyes met. For once... Neither of them tried to hide behind work. Adrian walked toward the coffee machine. "I've never thanked you." Lena blinked. "For what?" "For following me into the fire." She smiled faintly. "You would've done the same." "I already did." He handed her a mug. Their fingers brushed. Neither pulled away immediately. It lasted only a second. But something changed. Not love. Not yet. Something quieter. The certainty that neither of them wanted to face this alone. Across the city... Inside an abandoned church... A man in a dark suit placed Lena's stolen employee file on a wooden table. Around him sat six others. Each wore a silver ring engraved with a white rose. The oldest among them opened the file. He studied Lena's childhood photograph. Then smiled. "So..." "The last Hart has finally come home." He looked around the room. "What about Adrian Wolfe?" One woman answered calmly. "He'll never stop protecting her." The old man nodded. "Good." "Then we won't separate them." Confused glances filled the room. He continued, "We'll make him choose." "Between the truth..." "...and the woman he loves." The next morning... Lena arrived early. The office was unusually quiet. A bouquet of fresh white lilies sat neatly on her desk. No card. Just one envelope. Inside... A single handwritten sentence. Trust is expensive. Soon, Adrian Wolfe won't be able to afford it. Lena's smile faded. She looked toward Adrian's office. The door was open. His chair was empty. Marcus hurried down the corridor. The color had drained from his face. He looked at Lena. Then at the empty office. His voice barely rose above a whisper. "Miss Hart..." "Mr. Wolfe never came home last night." END OF CHAPTER 12
