Chapter 2. Her Boss's daughter
Isla stood in front of the two hefty men who didn't have any ounce of playfulness on their faces. They were guarding the entrance into the Moretti manor, the place where her interview was to be held.
On her way here, she couldn't help but fall into a trance as she passed by the magical nature that surrounded the place. It screamed everything power and wealth. Isla has seen her own share of money and power and everything bought by both, but this...this was exceptional. It was as though the environment was plucked out from an exquisite painting and transformed into something real. However, the loom that surrounded it made her heart clench.
"This Mr Moretti..." she muttered under her breath. The woman who had gotten this job for her, Ma'am Elaine had warned her. She told her to make sure not to do anything to upset Mr Moretti. She heard more scary things from Ma'am Elaine.
"Mr Moretti is dangerous. Powerful and ruthless. He doesn't bat an eyelid to anything that doesn't suit his taste. No nanny that has stayed there lasted for a week. Some, just twenty-four hours. The longest was two days".
"And what's the reason for their inability to last?" she has asked.
"His daughter" Ma'am Elaine answered.
Despite knowing her temper especially towards spoilt little kids, Isla still said, "I will try my best". She needed this job. So much. And...she would try everything to keep it. This was her only way to keep herself safe. The perfect place. From everything she had heard, this man is powerful, so, no one could come close.
"Who are you?" one of the bodyguards asked her.
She swallowed. "I'm Isla Hayes. The new nanny to be interviewed"
"Let's see your credentials" the second bodyguard asked, his voice icy cold. Isla quickly handed it over. She was on her best behavior. She was already late, so...she couldn't do anything else that would cost her this job.
The two bodyguards looked at the credentials, then gave her one last stern look before letting her in. She went in.
Cold. Domineering. Even suffocating. Too dark. But, she had seen a lot more like this. However this one carried a little hint of...sadness?
"Are you the new nanny applicant?" An old man walked up to her.
"Yes" she replied with a slight bow.
"Follow me" he said, voice so unfriendly and cold. It was as though everyone in this house had a penchant for dull and frosty aura. But she still followed.
They arrived in front of a door, tall and domineering. As Isla looked at the door, she could feel the door telling her, "Don't you dare come closer"
But, if this was where her protection lies, she didn't mind walking through it. She could even enter fire for it.
The man knocked. Respectfully. And calmly.
The doors slid open. Isla raised her brows, giving a secret thumbs up to her soon-to-be boss.
'This is it! No going back. If I fail here, I might as well just die!' Isla said within herself.
The man stepped in and she followed, her steps clattering noisily against the tiled floor. The man stopped abruptly, eyeing her. "You might want to remove those shoes if you don't know how to walk in them!" His voice was silently harsh. He couldn't have her dragging him down with her. Such clumsy woman! "You're already late, yet you can't even walk"
Isla swallowed, calming the anger that was rising in her chest. This man! "I apologize sir"
The man ignored her and kept walking forward. Isla's shoes were pumps, so, they were bound to produce noise as she walked. She hurriedly pulled them off. It doesn't matter if she walked on the icy cold floor, as long as she got this job.
The air inside felt sterile, Isla noticed. Controlled. It was as though, someone had wiped every ounce of joy that once lived here. She had noticed it from the entrance but didn't know how intense it was.
"Sir Moretti" the old man greeted with a deep bow. Isla quickly bowed as well, but didn't hesitate to eye the old man. He was just speaking harshly to her but in front of this man...he couldn't even breathe properly. She could even see the tiny sweats building up at his temple. She secretly sneered at him. When power meets a higher power, they must bow!
"This, is the nanny applicant. I'm sorry she's late for this interview. I should have let her know the severity of not being punctual" the old man said.
Isla looked at the man seated behind the grey desk with a glassy top. His eyes... She quickly looked away. She couldn't even look for a second. His eyes were just like an abyss. For a moment, she thought she was about to be swallowed by them. She could have ogled at how handsome he is despite being a single dad, but she didn't have such luxury at the moment. She only had eyes for this job!
"Isla Hayes?" she heard him ask. His voice...deep and surprisingly stirring. Isla felt her soul leave her body and slam right back in.
'Is that even supposed to be someone's voice?!' she screamed in her mind.
"Yes" her voice came out, dry. She quickly cleared her throat.
"You're late, you know that right?"
"Yes Mr Moretti. I apologize, something came up"
"Mm" Dante arched his brows. "Well, it doesn't matter if you're late or not. You won't last anyways, just like the others".
Isla swallowed. "I will try my best"
"That's what they all said" Dante mocked in a cold tone. Isla clutched her credentials tightly.
"Bring it here" Dante demanded.
She hastily handed it to him. "Here Mr Moretti".
Dante took it from her. He didn't bother with her and started going through the credentials. "You don't wear shoes inside the house?" he asked noticing her barefoot. A slender and graceful digits of ten. They didn't look like someone who worked off jobs, Dante noticed but he said nothing.
"Oh" Isla almost jumped as if she had been scalded. 'How did he even see that?' Even the old man who was standing beside her gave a start. He quickly looked at Isla, wondering if she would out him.
"I just didn't want to disturb the quietude of the house" Isla explained.
Dante didn't say anything. He just glossed over the papers in his hands. He didn't bother looking too much because she won't last. 'She's young and probably can't even handle kids. She might even leave tonight' he said within.
"Well, I will give you--" Dante was about to give Isla the usual sentence he always gave all the nannies he had hired but, a knock interrupted.
The doors slid open and a man dressed in suit walked in, hand in hand with a little girl.
"Aria!" Dante stood from his seat.
However, Aria didn't answer him. Something else caught her attention. Instead of looking at her father, she was looking at the lady who was dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt.
Isla was also shocked to see the little girl from earlier standing in the same room as her. She looked at Dante and then at Aria. Before she could even say anything, the little girl tore away from the driver's hand and rushed to Isla. Her tiny arms were spread apart, asking for a hug. Isla also opened her arms for the little girl. It was surprising that they were reuniting this soon but what was even more s
urprising is that, she's her boss's daughter?!
