2. What I swore I’d Never do

Bella's POV "Say something," Ashley's voice crackled through the phone, delighted with herself. "Cat got your tongue, sweetie?" I looked at Alexander, not at the phone but directly at him.. At the man who was letting another woman mock me in my own bedroom, in the bed we'd shared eight hours ago, and saying nothing to stop her. "Alexander." My voice came out steady, even for me. "Hang up the phone." He blinked, like he'd forgotten I could still command a room. "I said hang up." He did slowly. Like he wasn't sure why he was obeying me at all. "You let her call me that," I said. "In our house, while I'm sitting in our bed. And you said nothing." "Bellaaaa!" "Four years." I stood, pulling my robe around me, needing armor even if it was just cotton. "Four years I stayed quiet when your mother asked why my stomach was still flat. For four years I smiled through it at every family dinner and you couldn't manage five seconds of decency to defend me from a woman who left you without so much as a note." "She's dying, Bella. People aren't themselves when they're scared." "And I'm not allowed to be angry when I'm humiliated?" I laughed, and it scraped my throat on the way out. "Fine. You want a divorce? You'll get one. But not like this. Not with you deciding everything and me just nodding along like I don't matter." That got his attention. "What do you mean?" "I mean I'm not signing anything until my lawyer reviews it. I mean the house in Brookhaven stays mine, I picked every tile in that kitchen while you were in Singapore. I mean you tell your mother the truth yourself, to her face, instead of letting her hear it from the staff." I met his eyes. "And you give me time. Not because I'm holding onto you, Alexander. Because I refuse to let you erase four years of my life in a single morning." He didn't answer right away. For a second, I saw something almost like respect flicker across his face, gone before I could be sure it was real. "Fine," he said finally. "Take the house. Take whatever you want." I almost laughed again. He still didn't understand. It was never about the house. I found myself standing in the rain that afternoon, unable to sit still in a house that no longer felt like mine, and my feet carried me to the bakery on Fifth without asking permission from my brain. I hadn't been back since the proposal. Three years ago, almost to the day, Alexander had shown up outside this same bakery soaked to the bone, a ring box shoved into his coat pocket, his hair plastered to his forehead. I'd laughed at him through the window, certain he'd lost his mind standing in a downpour like that. He'd knocked until I came outside. "Alexander, you're going to catch pneumonia…" "I don't care." He'd dropped to one knee right there on the wet pavement, ignoring the people stepping around us with their umbrellas. "I'd rather drown out here asking you than live one more dry, comfortable day not knowing. Marry me, Bella. Let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret it." I remembered saying yes before he even finished the sentence. I remembered thinking I'd found a man who would choose me even when it was inconvenient, even when it cost him something. Standing outside that same bakery now, the dry season somehow feeling colder than that rain ever had, I understood the truth I'd been avoiding for months. He'd meant it, once. That was the cruelest part. It hadn't been a lie. It had just been temporary, like everything else he'd promised me, and I'd been too in love to notice the expiration date. By the time I got home, there was a car in the driveway I recognized immediately, his mother's old cream-colored sedan, the one she refused to trade in no matter how many times Alexander offered to buy her something newer. Voices carried from the kitchen before I even opened the door. "Can't be serious, Alexander. You're divorcing Bella? For Ashley?" His mother's voice, sharp in a way I rarely heard. "The girl who left you at twenty-three without so much as a phone call, and you're throwing away your wife for her?" "Mom, it's complicated…" "It is not complicated. It is cruel." A pause, and I could picture her exactly, arms crossed, chin lifted the way she did when she'd made up her mind about something. "Do you know who sat with me for eleven hours when my hip surgery went wrong? It wasn't you, Alexander. You were in Singapore. It was Bella. Bella held my hand. Bella learned to cook your grandmother's recipes because she wanted to belong in this family. And you want to throw her away for a woman who broke your heart once already?" I stood frozen in the hallway, one hand still on the door, not sure whether to announce myself or disappear back into the rain. "She knows Ashley is sick," Alexander said, quieter now, defensive. "She agreed to the divorce." "Because you gave her no choice," his mother snapped. "I raised you better than this." The silence that followed felt longer than it probably was. Then footsteps, and the kitchen door swung open, and his mother's eyes found mine in the hallway, she must have known I was standing there the whole time, must have wanted me to hear every word. "Bella." Her voice softened instantly, the way it always did when she looked at me, like I was still hers even if her son didn't want me anymore. "Come here, sweetheart." Alexander's face drained of color as his mother crossed the kitchen, brushed past him without a glance, and pulled me into her arms like she was the one who owed me an apology. Over her shoulder, I watched Alexander's phone light up on the counter. Ashley's name flashed across the screen again. He didn’t answer it in front of us. He just stared at it, jaw tight, until it stopped ringing and then, without a word to either of us, he grabbed his car keys off the counter and walked out the front door. His mother’s arms tightened around me as we listened to his car pull out of the driveway. “Let him go,” she murmured against my hair, though I hadn’t moved to follow. “Let’s see what he does when no one’s there to defend him.”
