Chapter 4: Secrets Within the Academy

942 Words
The courtyard remained silent. Hundreds of students stared at Aria as the silver light between her and Kael slowly faded into the air. No one moved. No one spoke. Aria looked from one face to another, confused by the mixture of shock, curiosity, and fear in their eyes. "What just happened?" she asked quietly. Kael didn't answer immediately. Instead, he kept his eyes fixed on her necklace—the crescent moon pendant her father had given her. His expression changed. "You should never take that necklace off," he said. Before Aria could ask why, Professor Elias Thorn stepped between them. "That's enough, Kael." Kael nodded respectfully. "My apologies, Professor." He looked at Aria one last time. "We'll meet again." With that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd. The whispers began again. "Did you see that light?" "It reacted to Kael!" "She's really the one..." Professor Thorn gently guided Aria toward the castle doors. "Try not to listen to the rumors." "Rumors?" Aria asked. "They're only stories." "But everyone seems to know something about me." Professor Thorn's smile faded. "Sometimes, stories become legends. And legends make people afraid." --- Inside Mooncrest Academy, the castle was even more breathtaking. Towering marble columns stretched toward a ceiling painted with stars that moved like the real night sky. Crystal chandeliers floated without chains, casting a soft silver glow throughout the enormous entrance hall. Students from every corner of the academy hurried through the corridors. Some looked completely human, while others had unusual features—golden eyes, pointed ears, glowing markings, or hair in impossible shades of silver, blue, and crimson. Aria couldn't stop staring. "This place..." "...is incredible." Professor Thorn chuckled. "You'll get used to it." "I don't think I ever will." As they climbed the grand staircase, portraits hanging on the walls suddenly turned their heads to watch Aria pass. One elderly woman inside a painting smiled kindly. "So she's finally here." Another portrait bowed respectfully. "The Moon Bloodline returns." Aria froze. "Did... did the paintings just talk?" Professor Thorn smiled. "They're enchanted." "I'm never getting used to this." --- Eventually, they stopped before a pair of massive oak doors engraved with wolves circling a full moon. Professor Thorn pushed them open. Inside sat an elderly man with long silver hair and calm emerald eyes. He wore elegant white robes embroidered with golden moons. Despite his gentle appearance, an overwhelming aura of power filled the room. He stood as Aria entered. "Welcome, Aria Blackwood." She bowed politely. "You must be Headmaster Orion." He smiled warmly. "I've been waiting for this day for seventeen years." Her heart skipped a beat. "You knew me before I was born?" "I knew your parents." Aria stepped forward. "My father won't tell me anything." "My mother died, and nobody will explain why." "Everyone here keeps looking at me like they know some secret." Headmaster Orion sighed deeply. "There are truths that cannot be revealed all at once." "I'm tired of hearing that." The old man's expression softened. "I understand." He walked toward a large window overlooking the academy grounds. "Tell me, Aria." "Have you ever felt... different?" She hesitated. "I've always had strange dreams." "I hear wolves." "I can smell rain before it falls." "And sometimes..." She looked down at her hands. "...I feel stronger than I should." Orion nodded. "Exactly as I expected." "What does it mean?" "It means your journey has begun." --- Later that afternoon, Professor Thorn escorted Aria to the girls' residence hall. Her room overlooked a sparkling lake surrounded by pine forests. Waiting inside was a cheerful girl with curly auburn hair and bright green eyes. She smiled the moment Aria entered. "You must be my new roommate!" She rushed over. "I'm Luna Ashford." Aria smiled nervously. "I'm Aria." "I know." Luna laughed. "Everyone knows." Aria groaned. "Seriously?" "You caused quite the scene outside." Luna lowered her voice. "Don't worry." "I don't care about the gossip." "I care about making friends." For the first time since arriving, Aria relaxed. "I'd like that." The two girls spent the next hour unpacking and talking. Luna explained the academy's classes—combat training, magical history, supernatural languages, survival, and Moon Energy studies. "Moon Energy?" Aria asked. Luna blinked. "You really don't know anything, do you?" Aria shook her head. "My father kept me away from all of this." Luna smiled gently. "Then we'll learn together." --- That evening, a large bell echoed across the academy. Students poured into the magnificent dining hall. Four long tables stretched across the room, each marked with the crest of a different house. Professor Thorn led Aria to an empty seat. The conversations around the hall slowly died. Headmaster Orion stood. "My dear students..." "It is my honor to welcome our newest member." He turned toward Aria. "Miss Aria Blackwood." Polite applause filled the hall. Some students smiled. Others continued watching her suspiciously. Suddenly— The candles flickered. A freezing wind swept through the room. The giant stained-glass windows rattled violently. Then every candle burned with silver flames. Aria's necklace began to glow beneath her uniform. She clutched it in surprise. Across the room, Kael stood abruptly. His sharp eyes scanned the hall. "We're not alone." A deafening roar echoed from outside the castle walls. The ground trembled beneath everyone's feet. Students jumped to their feet. A teacher rushed into the hall, breathing heavily. "Headmaster!" "The northern barrier has been breached!" Silence fell over the room. Headmaster Orion's face turned grim. "They've found us." Far beyond the academy walls, hidden within the dark forest, dozens of glowing crimson eyes opened in the darkness. The hunt for the last Alpha heir had begun.
