Chapter 6: The Wolf Awakens

The shattering of the academy's barrier echoed across the mountains like thunder. For the first time in centuries, Mooncrest Academy stood exposed. Students rushed through the corridors in panic while teachers formed defensive lines around the castle. Outside, the crimson-eyed Shadow Beasts poured through the broken barrier, their howls filling the night. Deep beneath the academy, Aria stared at the fading image of her mother. "Please!" she cried. "Don't leave!" The vision smiled one last time. "Trust your heart, Aria." "The moon will always guide you." The crystal's light faded, and the chamber fell silent. Aria wiped the tears from her face. "I don't even know how to save anyone." Luna stepped beside her and gently squeezed her shoulder. "You won't have to do it alone." Before Aria could reply, Professor Thorn rushed into the chamber. "There you are!" His normally calm face was filled with urgency. "We've been searching everywhere." "I'm sorry," Aria said. "I heard a voice." Professor Thorn glanced at the Moon Crystal. "I know." "There isn't time to explain." "The academy is under attack." --- Outside the castle gates, Kael and the senior students fought desperately. A massive Shadow Beast charged toward a group of frightened first-years. Kael leaped in front of them. His silver sword blazed with moonlight as it clashed against the creature's claws. The impact threw him backward. He landed hard but quickly climbed to his feet. "We need reinforcements!" another student shouted. Professor Thorn emerged from the castle. "Protect the students at all costs!" The battle intensified. Magic lit the night sky. Flames, ice, wind, and silver energy collided with the invading beasts. Even together, the defenders were slowly being pushed back. High above them, Magnus Bloodfang watched with a satisfied smile. "They're weaker than I expected." One of his followers stepped forward. "My lord, shall we search for the girl?" Magnus nodded. "Bring her to me alive." --- Professor Thorn led Aria and Luna toward a hidden exit that overlooked the battlefield. When Aria saw the destruction, she gasped. Parts of the academy walls had crumbled. Trees burned with eerie blue fire. Students fought bravely, but many were exhausted. Then she saw Kael. He was surrounded by three enormous Shadow Beasts. His breathing was heavy. Blood trickled from a cut above his eyebrow. Without thinking, Aria ran toward him. "Aria!" Professor Thorn shouted. "Come back!" But she couldn't. Something inside her refused to let Kael fight alone. As one of the beasts lunged toward him, Aria stepped between them. "Stop!" The beast roared. Its glowing claws swung toward her. Kael's eyes widened. "Move!" Time seemed to slow. Aria instinctively raised her hands. The crescent necklace around her neck burst into brilliant silver light. A wave of energy exploded outward. The Shadow Beast was thrown backward through the air, crashing into a stone pillar. The entire battlefield fell silent. Every eye turned toward Aria. She stared at her glowing hands. "I... I didn't..." Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her body. She collapsed to one knee. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Her senses exploded to life. She could hear every heartbeat around her. She could smell the smoke, the rain in the distant clouds, and the scent of every wolf on the battlefield. Her silver eyes began to glow. Kael hurried to her side. "Aria!" She looked up at him. For just a moment, Kael saw something impossible reflected in her eyes. The silhouette of a magnificent silver wolf. Professor Thorn whispered in amazement. "The seal..." "It's breaking." --- Far across the battlefield, Magnus stepped forward. At last, he had seen what he had waited seventeen years to witness. "The Moon Wolf..." He smiled. "So the legends were true." Dark energy gathered around him as he slowly approached. "My dear Aria." "You've inherited your mother's gift." "But you still don't know how to use it." Kael stepped protectively in front of Aria. "You'll have to go through me first." Magnus laughed. "You are brave." "But bravery alone won't save her." With a wave of his hand, dozens of Shadow Beasts charged toward the defenders. Headmaster Orion raised his staff. A towering wall of silver light erupted across the battlefield. "Retreat!" he ordered. "All students, return to the castle!" The teachers formed a protective line while students hurried back inside. Kael helped Aria to her feet. "We have to go." She nodded weakly. As they reached the castle doors, Aria looked back. Magnus stood motionless beneath the moonlight, his crimson eyes locked on hers. Instead of chasing her, he smiled. "I've waited seventeen years." "I can wait a little longer." "But remember this, Aria Blackwood." "The next time we meet..." "...your wolf will belong to me." A chill ran down Aria's spine. For the first time, she realized the attack had never been about destroying the academy. It had been about finding her. And now Magnus knew exactly who she was. As the great doors of Mooncrest Academy closed behind the students, the full moon emerged from the clouds. High above the castle, a lone silver wolf appeared on the tallest tower. It lifted its head toward the moon and released a haunting howl that echoed across the valley. Aria placed a hand over her glowing necklace. Deep inside her, the sleeping wolf stirred once again. This time... it did not go back to sleep.
