Chapter 7: The First Lesson
The first rays of sunlight spilled across the towers of Mooncrest Academy, but the castle was far from peaceful.
Workers repaired broken walls with enchanted stone while teachers restored the magical barrier around the grounds. The attack from the previous night had left its mark. Students whispered in the corridors, wondering why the Shadow Wolves had risked exposing themselves.
Aria stood by the window of her dormitory, staring at the forest below.
She couldn't stop thinking about Magnus Bloodfang.
"The next time we meet... your wolf will belong to me."
His words echoed in her mind.
A knock sounded at the door.
Luna stepped inside, carrying two academy uniforms.
"You've been awake for hours, haven't you?"
Aria nodded.
"I couldn't sleep."
Luna gave her a sympathetic smile.
"After last night, I don't think anyone did."
She handed Aria her uniform.
"Professor Thorn wants all first-year students at the training arena in thirty minutes."
"Training?" Aria asked.
Luna grinned.
"Welcome to Mooncrest Academy."
---
The academy's training arena was enormous.
Stone walls surrounded a wide circular field covered with soft silver sand. Hundreds of students filled the seats overlooking the arena, eager to watch the first lesson after the attack.
Professor Thorn stood in the center, dressed in black training armor.
"Yesterday," he began, "our enemies reminded us that strength without discipline is useless."
He scanned the students.
"Today, we begin learning to control the gifts we have been given."
His gaze rested on Aria.
"And for some of you... discovering those gifts."
The students murmured quietly.
Professor Thorn continued.
"Your first lesson is simple."
"Learn to sense Moon Energy."
He raised his hand, and a glowing silver orb appeared above his palm.
"This energy flows through every living thing. The stronger your connection, the greater your abilities."
He waved his hand.
Dozens of silver crystals rose from the ground.
"Each of you will touch a crystal."
"It will reveal your natural affinity."
One by one, students stepped forward.
Some crystals glowed blue.
Others turned gold, green, or violet.
The crowd applauded each successful result.
Finally...
"Aria Blackwood."
The arena became silent.
Aria walked slowly toward the largest crystal.
She hesitated.
Professor Thorn smiled reassuringly.
"Don't be afraid."
She placed her hand on the crystal.
For a heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then the crystal exploded with brilliant silver light.
A powerful wave of energy swept across the arena.
The ground trembled.
The sky darkened.
High above the academy, clouds parted, revealing the full moon—even though it was still morning.
Students gasped.
"No way..."
"The Moon answered her!"
The crystal floated into the air.
Ancient symbols circled Aria like glowing stars.
Professor Thorn's eyes widened.
"Incredible..."
Even Headmaster Orion, watching from a balcony, stood in stunned silence.
"The Moon has accepted her," he whispered.
---
Suddenly, Aria cried out in pain.
Her heartbeat quickened.
The world around her became sharper.
She could hear every whisper in the arena.
She could smell the flowers growing beyond the walls.
Then...
A deep growl echoed inside her mind.
She closed her eyes.
Standing before her was a magnificent silver wolf.
Its fur shimmered like moonlight.
Its bright blue eyes were calm and wise.
The wolf spoke—not with words, but directly into her thoughts.
"Do not fear me."
Aria swallowed.
"Who are you?"
"I am the spirit of the Moon Wolf."
"I have waited for you."
Before she could ask another question, the vision disappeared.
The crystal slowly returned to the ground.
Aria opened her eyes.
Professor Thorn caught her before she fell.
"What happened?" he asked.
"I saw..."
She hesitated.
"A wolf."
Headmaster Orion exchanged a worried glance with Professor Thorn.
The prophecy was unfolding faster than they had expected.
---
As the lesson ended, Kael approached Aria.
"You frightened everyone."
"I frightened myself," she admitted.
Kael smiled faintly.
"You'll get used to it."
"You seem very calm."
"I've been training my whole life."
He looked toward the forest beyond the academy walls.
"But I've never seen the Moon answer someone before."
"What does it mean?"
"It means your power is far greater than anyone imagined."
Before Aria could reply, a loud cry came from one of the academy towers.
A messenger hawk circled overhead carrying a scroll marked with the royal seal of the Werewolf Council.
Headmaster Orion opened the message.
His expression darkened.
"The Council has spoken."
Professor Thorn stepped closer.
"What do they want?"
Orion folded the scroll slowly.
"They are sending representatives to Mooncrest Academy."
"To judge whether Aria Blackwood is truly the last Moon Alpha..."
"...or a threat that must be eliminated."
A cold silence swept over the arena.
For the first time since arriving at Mooncrest Academy, Aria realized that not every enemy was waiting outside the academy walls.
Some would soon walk through its front gates.
