Chapter Two – Collision

1075 Words
Elena wove through the terrace, pretending to be engaged in the chatter of the crowd but scanning, always scanning, for a glimpse of him. She told herself it was foolish — the man had likely disappeared into some inner circle of investors or slipped away altogether. Still, her eyes tracked movement automatically, searching. And instead, she found Mia. “Elena Carter,” her friend sang out, swooping in like a glittering comet. She carried two champagne flutes, her gold dress catching every shard of light and throwing it back with scandalous enthusiasm. “You look like you’ve been caught in a quarterly earnings report instead of a rooftop soirée.” She pressed a glass into Elena’s hand with mock solemnity. “Drink. Your aura is terrifying.” Elena arched a brow. “My aura?” “Yes,” Mia said, her dark eyes dancing. “You’re standing here looking like you’re about to negotiate a merger with the skyline. For once, relax. The world won’t crumble if you have some fun.” Elena accepted the glass, though she sniffed before sipping. Crisp, chilled bubbles fizzed across her tongue, softening the tightness in her chest. “I am relaxed.” Mia snorted. “If this is your version of relaxed, I’d hate to see tense.” “Careful,” Elena murmured, a hint of dry humor threading her voice. “I’ve seen the photos of you at last year’s gala. That dress could have been classified as a felony.” “Exactly,” Mia said proudly. “And you’re welcome. I dragged you here, didn’t I? You’d be in your office right now if it weren’t for me.” Elena’s silence was answer enough. Mia tilted her head, gaze sharpening. She had known Elena long enough to see the shift — the way her friend’s posture had stiffened, the way her eyes kept scanning the terrace as if they were hunting. “Wait a second,” Mia said slowly. “You saw someone.” Elena shook her head, too quickly. “Just… a face I recognized.” Mia leaned in, lowering her voice. “Recognized, or couldn’t look away from?” Before Elena could craft a retort, the atmosphere changed. It wasn’t dramatic. No music shift, no announcement, no spotlight. But the hum of conversation thinned, just slightly, as though the crowd collectively inhaled. People adjusted their postures. Smiles sharpened. Heads tilted subtly toward the terrace entrance. Adrian Blackwell had arrived. He didn’t need to announce himself. His presence was its own introduction. He moved through the crowd with an unhurried grace, every line of his body saying he owned the space he walked in. The suit — black, tailored within an inch of perfection — clung to broad shoulders, his stride measured, deliberate. A man like him didn’t rush. The world made room. And it did. People shifted without realizing it, bodies angling to make space in his path. Some smiled too brightly, reaching out with quick greetings he barely acknowledged. Others simply stared, the kind of fascination that clung like static electricity. Mia’s glass froze halfway to her lips. “Holy hell,” she breathed, forgetting subtlety. “Is that—?” “Yes,” Elena said, the word catching on her tongue. Adrian’s gaze swept the terrace once. And then it found her. The noise blurred, the music fading into the background hum of her own pulse. The weight of his stare pressed into her like heat against bare skin. Elena lifted her chin. She had stared down CEOs, out-negotiated men who had twice her experience, and navigated rooms where one wrong word meant losing everything. She was not the kind of woman who flinched beneath anyone’s gaze. And yet her pulse betrayed her, quick and unsteady. Adrian tilted his head, just slightly — a gesture that carried the intimacy of a touch, though he hadn’t moved closer. And then he began to walk toward her. Step by step. The crowd parted like water around stone. Whispered greetings followed in his wake, but he gave them nothing more than brief acknowledgments. His focus was unshakable. Fixed. On her. “Elena Carter,” Mia whispered in a half-panicked, half-thrilled tone. “If you don’t marry him, I might.” Elena shot her a glare sharp enough to wound, though it lost its edge when the corners of her mouth threatened to curve. Adrian stopped in front of her. Close enough that his presence filled the air, his cologne threading between them — dark spice, clean smoke, something expensive and grounded. His eyes were darker up close, sharper, the kind of gaze that could cut through armor if one wasn’t careful. “Elena Carter,” he said, his voice low, velvet with steel edges. He didn’t ask her name. He stated it, as though he already knew. Her heart gave a traitorous skip. “Adrian Blackwell,” she returned, even, steady, though every syllable cost her. A slow smile touched his mouth, not quite soft, not quite dangerous. “So we don’t need introductions.” Mia coughed lightly into her champagne, clearly dying. “Well,” she announced far too brightly, “I suddenly feel an overwhelming need to… go admire the hors d’oeuvres.” She winked at Elena, not even pretending, before slipping away with a sway of gold satin. Elena was left in the orbit of Adrian Blackwell. “You disappeared earlier,” she said, her tone cooler than her pulse allowed. “I had no reason to stay,” he replied smoothly. His gaze never wavered. “Until now.” Elena arched a brow. “That’s quite a line.” “Truth rarely needs embellishment,” he said simply. She huffed a soft laugh, more to steady herself than at his words. “And how often does that work?” His smile deepened, faint but deliberate. “That depends on the woman. Most don’t challenge me when I speak.” Elena took a sip of her champagne, letting the bubbles fizz as armor on her tongue. “Then you’ve been speaking to the wrong women.” For the first time, his expression shifted — interest, sharper now, glinting in his eyes like a spark struck from flint. The city pulsed below them. The party buzzed around them. But in that moment, Elena felt as though the rooftop had narrowed to a single point: the electric space between her and Adrian Blackwell.
