CHAPTER 2: The Undying Awakening

1801 Words
The thick darkness slowly began to fade, replaced by a consciousness that felt like sharp shards of glass piercing his brain. Kael opened his eyes, but all he found was a sickening sight. He lay upon a bed of rusted metal debris and dull gray soil. The stinging stench of toxic chemicals and burnt metal filled his senses, turning his stomach and making his breathing heavy. He tried to move, but his body felt as if it had been shattered into pieces. Suddenly, a high-pitched buzzing sound echoed within his head. The sound was mechanical, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion. A system notification appeared before his eyes: Undying System detected. Cell repair process initiated. The pain arrived like the strike of a sledgehammer. Kael screamed inwardly as he felt his crushed ribs shift, knitting themselves back together with a horrific grinding sound. His muscles, torn and shredded by the poison, began to mend, pulling his flesh and skin together in an unnatural process of regeneration. He felt as if he were being boiled alive from within, while every nerve in his body sent agonizing distress signals. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to fight the waves of pain that continued to assault him. His hands clenched, his stiff fingers trying to dig into the toxic soil beneath him. Every inch of movement was a struggle against death itself. Cold sweat poured down his forehead, evaporating quickly as it touched the hot metal surface surrounding him. Why can I still feel this? he muttered in his chaotic mind. I should be dead. Everything should have ended on that platform. However, the system provided no answer. It simply continued to function, forcing Kael's body to defy its fate. Kael could feel how the Aether-Poison dagger that had pierced his back was now being pushed out by the newly formed muscle tissue. The metal blade fell to the ground with a faint clink, leaving behind a scar that began to close rapidly. He managed to draw a long breath, even though every exhale felt like inhaling tiny shards of glass. He slowly tilted his head. Around him, the hulking remains of giant machines from an ancient war era lay scattered like a massive graveyard. Jagged remnants of metal jutted toward the sky, forming frightening silhouettes beneath the toxic fog of The Abyss. The sky up here held no stars or moonlight. There were only thick, gray-purple clouds swirling slowly, covering the only world he had ever known. Kael forced his right hand to rise. His movement was jerky, like a machine long left without lubrication. He looked at his own hand. His skin now appeared paler, with bluish veins pulsing beneath the surface. A scar faded rapidly right at his wrist. He tried to grip the soil, feeling his strength slowly returning. This was not merely healing; this was strengthening. Suddenly, the buzzing sound in his head shifted into a sharp warning tone. A new notification appeared before his eyes, this time with flashing red text. Warning: Low-class predatory entity detected within a fifty-meter radius. Alertness increased. Kael froze. A predator? In a place like this? He tried to turn his body to sit up. Every movement he made still left lingering pain, but the agony no longer paralyzed him as it had before. He could hear the sound of something heavy dragging itself across the metal floor, something with sharp claws or limbs. The sound grew closer, coming from behind a pile of debris to his left. He knew he had no weapons. He possessed only deep-seated hatred and a body that had just risen from destruction. He could not just lie there and become prey. Kael scanned his surroundings with eyes that were beginning to adapt to the darkness of The Abyss. Near his hip, he saw a shard of sharp metal large enough to serve as an improvised knife. With his remaining strength, he crawled toward the metal, his trembling hand slowly grasping its sharp edge. The dragging sound stopped just behind the wall of debris. Kael held his breath. His heart pounded, a rhythm he felt was far stronger and faster than that of a normal human. Was this a side effect of the system? Was he now becoming something more? He had no time to ponder the philosophy of his new life. He had to focus on survival. The predator snorted. Its voice sounded like iron grinding against stone. Kael could feel the heat radiating from the monster, carrying the stench of rotting blood. He stood up unsteadily, his newly healed legs feeling weak but capable of supporting his weight. He had to be ready. If he could survive here, nothing would stop him from returning to the surface and destroying Lord Vane. Kael adjusted his stance, gripping the sharp metal tightly. He could hear heavy breathing from behind the pile of debris. Something was stalking him, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce and end his short-lived existence. Whatever you are, you will not have my soul today, Kael whispered inwardly. I will not die in this dumping ground. I have a blood debt to pay. The predator suddenly lunged, smashing through the pile of debris that stood between them. A creature with metallic scaled skin and glowing yellow eyes emerged from the shadows, its mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth wide open. Kael did not dodge. He took a step forward instead, letting the last system notification appear before the battle began. A system notification flashed in his vision: Estimated threat: High. Preemptive counter-attack suggested. Kael did not need the system's advice. His instincts took over. He swung the sharp metal with all his might, aiming for the soft spot on the creature's neck. The first battle for his new life had begun. He did not care if he had to lose more blood, as long as the monster lost its life first. As the metal in his hand almost reached the predator's skin, Kael felt a sensation of heat spreading across his back once more. The system went to work again, channeling energy from an unknown source into his arm muscles. The blow felt far heavier and faster than any normal human could deliver. He was certain his strike would pierce the monster's neck. Yet, at the same moment, the buzzing in his head returned at a different frequency. The sound was no longer just a warning, but a confirmation. Active ability: Physical overclocking activated. Energy consumption will increase tenfold. Kael felt his world slow down. He could see every movement of the predator in agonizing detail. Every drop of acidic saliva dripping from its jaw, every muscle movement in its neck. He twisted his body, using the momentum from the pain he had just endured to provide a greater push for his metal strike. He knew he could not miss. If he failed, he would be torn to shreds here, beneath toxic clouds that cared nothing for his death. The monster roared, its sound deafening. Kael did not falter. His focus was entirely on the creature's neck. He could feel a strange flow of energy coursing from within his body, a power he believed came from the Undying System beginning to merge with him. He was the betrayed Kael, the discarded Kael, but now he was something else. The metal in his hand pierced the predator's skin with ease, splashing thick black fluid that smelled of sulfur. Kael did not let the metal stop there. He pulled it back with a deeper slashing motion, tearing the monster's throat until it staggered backward. Kael did not let his opponent recover. He lunged forward, using the remaining momentum to slam the predator's faltering body against the wall of debris beside him. The monster whimpered, its voice slowly fading as it tried to rise with its dull claws. Kael gave it no chance. He leaped onto the creature's back, driving the sharp metal once again into its skull. A massive vibration shuddered through his arm as the metal penetrated the hard bone. The monster finally stopped moving, its body going limp and hitting the ground with a heavy thud. Kael stood over the monster's carcass, gasping for air. His breath was short and fast. He looked around, ensuring no other predators were drawn by the earlier commotion. Silence. Only the sound of the wind whistling in the distance remained. He felt relief, but overwhelming exhaustion began to overtake him again. The energy he had used for the overclocking began to drain his remaining reserves. The system provided a new notification before his eyes: Energy critical. Cell repair process suspended. Please locate an alternative energy source immediately. Kael fell to a sitting position beside the monster's carcass. He looked at his own hands, now covered in black blood. He had survived. But he realized this was only the beginning of a longer nightmare. In the depths of this Abyss, he was no longer a fugitive. He was a hunter. He was something that could not be easily killed. He stared into the distance, toward the shadows of the deepening chasm. There, he could feel something watching him. Not just one predator, but many. The malevolent aura radiating from the depths of the abyss made him shiver, yet he no longer felt fear. He felt hunger. He felt the need to become stronger. If this chasm was a place for monsters, then he would be the king among them. He tried to stand again, but his body felt incredibly heavy. He was only able to move a single finger when suddenly the system emitted a piercing warning tone. System notification: Presence of a much larger predatory entity detected. Estimated distance: 30 meters. Threat level: Extreme. Kael froze. He tried to turn toward the source of the sound. Behind the towering piles of metal, a pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the darkness. The eyes were large, cold, and stared at him with a deep, profound hunger. He realized the earlier skirmish had been nothing but bait, luring the true predator out of its den. He had barely managed to move a single finger, and now he had to face something far more lethal. He tried to reach for his sharp metal again, but his hand felt stiff. The predator slowly stepped out from the darkness, revealing its giant form with claws capable of tearing through steel. Kael could only swallow hard with great difficulty. He could not escape, could not hide. He could only wait, staring into those red eyes with the last bit of courage he possessed. And at that moment, the system sensors detected the presence of other hungry predators approaching from the opposite side, making the situation even more chaotic than he could have ever imagined.
