Alpha Rue's POV
As I took the paper from the boy, I noticed Lilith staring at the number on it. Her eyes wide as she went pale like she had seen a ghost
“What is it… do you know whose number it is?” I asked.
She looked up at me, her eyes gloomy.
Damn it. Why is she tearing up?
I gritted my teeth as I shifted the paper from her view. It was hurting her, and she knows who it is.
Could it be someone close to her?
How close is that person?
I shook my head as I realized I was thinking too much. I shouldn't care that much.
I gave the number to Frakas. “Track it down.”
Frakas had his eyes on Lilith, he had noticed her reaction.
“Do you by any chance know who this is, miss?” Frakas questioned her.
I balled my fist as I stopped the pressing urge to ask him not to question her. She looked devastated.
She looked fragile and I don't know why I felt so protective of her, right from the moment I saw her in front of the clothes store.
Frakas and I were heading inside to do some investigation, but when I saw her being humiliated I had to stop and help her.
“I'm not sure,” Lilith replied.
Why is she lying? Is she trying to protect the criminal?
She raised her head and her gaze met mine. Her blue eyes seemed to be calling to me.
Damn… what am I saying.
“Come with me… I'll take you there,” Lilith said, as she stood up suddenly.
Well it seems I was right, but how could I sense her thoughts?
I took a deep breath as I cleared my thoughts as Frakas and I followed Lilith out.
We arrived in front of an apartment, she was about to open the door when Frakas asked, “Where is this?”
“This is my home,” Lilith replied softly, her eyes heavy.
Damn it… could it be that the man whose number was that is her mate?
That means her goddamn mate is using magic to hide the fact that he is cheating on her.
I balled up my fist as rage boiled through my bones.
One more look at her and all my anger washed away and I felt like closing her in my arms.
Her plump red cheeks and gloomy blue eyes cried for affection.
Damn… I felt my chest tightening and I stepped up to her as she was about to go in, I held her arm.
How I loved to hold her hand, it felt so soft and smooth.
“Lilith… do you need my work?”
She feigned a smile that didn't reach her eyes, “No.”
Just No… and she turned to leave. I don't like the fact that she doesn't need my help?
“Whatever you find or see inside... don't act. Come back out immediately and confirm it with me. We'll handle the next steps together,” Frakas said.
I don't know if Lilith heard him though, she just walked right inside.
I paced outside, impatiently. When I couldn't wait anymore, I entered the house.
I noticed a male and female clothes and shoes on the ground. It must belong to Lilith's mate and his lover.
I frowned out of disgust and I looked up to see Lilith rushing out, from the corridor. I caught her in my arms.
She cried bitterly as she pressed her head on my chest, I placed my hand on her back softly as I led her outside.
When she saw Frakas, she pulled back and nodded. “My husband has the pendant and he is with Dahlia, sleeping with…” she closed her mouth as she broke into sobs again.
I nodded at Frakas and he consoled Lilith and after she locked the door the way it was before, I took her to my penthouse.
When we reached, I let her relax in the guest room. I asked the maids to give her new clothes and food.
After a few hours, I knew she would be better now, so I sent for her.
She arrived in the sitting room, and quietly sat down. She looked more beautiful now that she has rested.
“Mrs Lilith, I am sorry you had to find out this way,” Frakas started, cutting me off from my thoughts.
“It's fine,” she wore a heart warming smile.
“I'll be asking a few questions now, if that's fine with you.” She nodded. “How long have you been married?”
“Seven years.”
“I didn't mean to intrude, but I did a quick background check on you and I heard you are a hard-working young lady.”
She looked up to Frakas blankly, as if she didn't know.
“You have been working to pay off debts your husband had before his marriage, correct?”
“Yes,” she chipped in.
“You lost your child, and you're diagnosed as infertile, because your husband whose debt you were working hard to pay, didn't bother to help, correct?”
She looked at Frakas again, her eyes flashing, she was mute for a while, then she mouthed. “Yes.”
I think Frakas had hit a sensitive spot. I sighed. This was the process though. Frakas is being professional.
“I heard that you have seen this Dahlia girl on various occasions with your husband, didn't it cross your mind that he was cheating?”
“I didn't feel the bond breaking… So, no… he told me they had nothing s****l going on.”
“She is a pretty, young, Omega, I heard she was his fated mate whom he found after choosing you, but, why didn't you think to doubt his words?”
Lilith swallowed as she stared into space.
Frakas' questions were hurting her. It sucks that I noticed how her eyes moved, her finger twitching.
“Why did you trust him blindly?”
“I loved him,” she whispered, and closed her eyes.
I held my breath as I turned to Frakas, he was about to ask another question when I raised my hand and gestured for him to leave.
He got up without wasting time and left.
“Belinda, are you okay?” I asked her.
She shot her gaze at me. “How do you know who I am?”
She was shocked that I called her by her maiden name, that was her mother's name, only her father called her that.
I smiled faintly. "I know you better than you know yourself. You are a beta, a natural warrior. You should fight for our pack instead of being trapped in that small room with a man."
I took a deep breath and continued, as I ignored her shocked expression. "We suspect that your husband is not only betraying you. He is likely involved in a cross-pack smuggling of dark magic contraband."
Her face turned pale.
"Since I took over the pack affairs, I have been investigating the whereabouts of forbidden magic. The most rampant is this kind of dark magic that isolates mate bonds, but this means that there is a power that can cover up the nature of werewolves. It involves a large collective case decades ago, with hundreds of victims."
“These are some of the victims,” I pointed at the list on the table in front of her. The name in the first row.
Beta Lucian Hunt, her father.
I saw her shoulders tense as she shivered.
"We need evidence and a complete chain of transactions. Having to find your husband is a breakthrough… we can end this war against werewolf nature and give justice to the lives lost to dark magic, but…”
“But?” she repeated.
“You are the only one who can gain Ryker's trust and get evidence.”
“Me?” She asked, her eyes scared.
It feels wrong that I am sending her back to him, but we have to solve this case, it's all that matters.
“Yes, Belinda, are you willing to help us?”
