Lilith’s POV “Wow… this is pretty,” I groaned as I stared at the lingeries on samples in the clothes store in my place of work. I just finished cleaning the grocery store. I was headed down the plaza towards the restaurant when I saw a red lingeries on a sample. Yesterday, Ryker had commented on my underwear being old fashioned. Maybe he would like it if I get this beautiful piece. I took a deep breath, and dropped the mop and bucket of water down as I walked into the store. I had a little bit of my salary left, after paying debts, household expenses and I bought some new outfits as a gift for Ryker. I will use the remaining money to get this lingerie. “How much is this?” I asked as I touched it, feeling its soft lace fabric. “That would be thirty,” the store keeper said as she looked me up and down. I knew her, but I didn’t know her name. She sees me when I go around cleaning. I had only twenty five left in my account though. “Is it not twenty?” I asked. “Twenty? You should just bring a gun, since you are planning to rob me.” I swallowed as I shook my head. “No… I…” “If you don’t have money, go away… instead of bringing your bad luck to touch my goods when I have not got any customers this morning… carry your mop and leave please.” “Hey!” I flinched when I held a deep baritone voice behind me, it sent shivers down my spine. I saw the store keeper’s horrified face, as she locked down. I was tempted to look back to see who it was, but I went stiff as I held his footsteps approaching. I quivered as large hands grabbed my arms with so much gentleness as he shifted me aside, and stood in front of me. I looked up at him, he was dressed corporately, and his blonde hair was neatly combed. I stared at his straight, broad back with large eyes as I wondered who he was. His scent overwhelmed me at that moment and I closed my eyes as I tried to figure out what it was. Fresh cider and a strong spicy smell of the forest. “Good morning, Alpha Rue.” I shot my eyes open out of shock. “Alpha… Alpha Rue?” I muttered under my breath as volts of shock ran through my body. I grabbed my hand where he touched me and I looked up at his back. This is the Alpha, why did he come in front of me? “How… dare you treat her like that?” He growled. I blinked. Is he defending me? “I- I’m sorry, Alpha,” the store keeper stuttered. “What does she want?” He asked. “Here, take the money and put other things she’ll like in there.” Is he paying for me? Oh my goodness, I should stop him. But, I am too stunned to move or talk to him. He turned to me, his eyes dark grey, he wore a blank expression as he handed me a bag filled with clothes and lingeries. I felt my cheeks burn as I turned away. “Thank you, I have to go.” I turned to leave, when he held my hand. I froze again. Damn it, why was my heart racing? “Take it.” his tone was like a calm command, I swallowed as I met his eyes again. He seemed to be staring into my soul, I tore my gaze away from him and I grabbed the bag. “Thank you… for standing up for me,” I said with a smile, looking at his nice shoes. It felt good to have someone defend me. I looked up and I caught his smile slightly but it faded away as soon as I saw it. I heard a gasp behind me and it was another store keeper. “Why would someone like him come here? I heard he hasn't found a mate yet... but girls like us don't even dare to dream." I blinked in confusion. Why was he here? I had seen him a few times from afar and I know a bit about him. He had been in foster care in another pack for years and only recently returned to inherit this pack. He's now officially the youngest and most promising leader among all the packs, he had once been doubted because of his youth and outstanding appearance. But after leading a brutal crackdown on rogue packs, no one dared question his authority again. As if he read my confusion he shifted closer to me as he said, "I heard some of these stores sometimes trade rare magic props," he said. "I'm looking for something that could block the mate bond's influence." I narrowed my eyes on him. I have never heard of something like that? I swallowed as I mustered the courage to speak “Why would you need that?” Does he have a mate? It would be unfair if he wants to use something like that on his mate. Alpha Rue smiled. “Can we sit and talk?” I nodded and led him back to the restaurant, an old Beta was with him and he came along with us. When he entered the restaurant, all my colleagues were stunned and Kate rushed up to me, and pulled me aside. “This is Alpha Rue… why is he here?” She was so excited I could see it in her eyes. “Wait… I will tell you all of it.” “Lilith… could you serve me?” Alpha Rue called. Kate jumped in excitement. “He chose you to serve him, run along.” I shook my head at her as I took Alpha Rue’s order. I acted like it was nothing, but deep down I can't stop wondering why he asked me to serve him out of all my colleagues. Maybe I am thinking too much, Kate’s syndrome has caught me. As he drank the black coffee I served him, he pointed to a chair next to him and asked me to sit, I turned and saw Kate nodding frantically at me. Everyone’seyes were on us, I feel so shy right now. Hesitantly, I sat on the chair. The old Beta cleared his throat and I turned to him. “We are investigating illegal magic artifacts, and tracking down forbidden items.” I nodded at him. And he continued, “If you know anyone that knows about the whereabouts of similar items, you have to report it to the pack house.” Just then, Joel, one of my colleagues who was listening, walked over and said, “There was someone.” I felt Alpha Rue's breathing pattern change and I turned to see his eyes had gone dark. “Speak.” Joel gulped. “I was on duty last month when a man came over. He asked about a pendant that blocks a mate from sensing infidelity.” “Then,” Alpha Rue pressed. “After we told him that there was no such thing, he left in a hurry and said that we would contact him immediately it arrives. I still have the customer's contact information.” “Good,” Alpha Rue breathed. “Can I have the number?” Joel hurried to the staff's room and in a short while, he was back, and he held out the piece of paper to Alpha Rue. As it crossed my front I caught a glimpse of it and I felt the blood drain from my face. It was my husband's number.
