The Unexpected Guest

1001 Words
Lunch was the most important meal of the day, next to breakfast that is. Alice finished balancing the accounts of a local bakery downtown and boy was it messy. She was nearly done with encoding it into their accounting software to make a report. Her stomach grumbled in protest. “Fudge.” She glanced at the clock in their office; it was 12:00 o’clock. “Hey it’s lunch time girl, let’s go grab something at the restaurant down town.” Chloe, cute girl with short blonde hair, otherwise known as one of her co-worker stood up from her cubicle. She grabbed onto the cubicle wall, showing off glittered nails. They usually got along. Key word, usually. Ah, Alice wanted to say yes, but her pocket felt too empty to agree. “Ah thank you, but I have to pass- need to finish this now. Enjoy your lunch though girl.” “Suit yourself then.” Chloe shrugged and sauntered out of their office along with other co-workers. “Ugh.” Alice grumbled under her breath as she ducked under her desk to grab her suitcase. Maybe she had a couple of dollars stuck in her lingerie somewhere for a sandwich or burrito. “Ah there it is.” It seemed heavier than she imagined, she lodged it on the desk. She opened the suitcase. “Alice!” The woman slammed it close, just in time as their firm’s receptionist Adam came over. “Yes Adam?” she gave him a grin, it ached her jaw already. The man used to be so cheerful, but now with a patch of balding hair somewhere, he seemed to be just wasting his days away in their lounge room. Most of their clients sent their requests and work via online after all. “Someone’s here to see you.” He explained and scratched his head, “He seems to want to take you out, I’ll just go tell your boss for you. I guess.” Adam muttered with a sigh. Alice froze, her memory from last night still awful. Did she get the wrong suitcase by mistake and the man found her underwear? “Er, thank you.” She gave a small pat on the man’s back and trudged towards the lounge area, her suitcase in hand. “Hello?” there was a man, dark hair and green eyes. He leaned against the reception’s counter and sipped on what seemed to be a cup of coffee. He seemed tall, his red polo shirt accentuating dark, skinny jeans and white sneakers. His head swerved towards her, a small polite smile formed on his lips. “Ah you’re finally here Miss Smith, he’s been waiting.” The man gave her a curt nod before walking towards her and handing a cup. “I ate your donut so sorry.” He took off towards the door. Alice blinked and felt the cup still warm in her hand. What was happening? She stopped herself from getting aboard a train of thoughts and chased after him, “Hold up!” “Hmm? We don’t have much time Miss.” The man stopped by a classic red motorcycle in the parking lot, he grabbed a dark helmet and tapped his feet. “Ugh, this seems like a bad idea.” She downed the drink without any hesitation. It was café latte with an extra whip of cream, he had good tastes. “I have to agree with you on that.” He took the cup from her hand and tossed the helmet to her. He scurried off to throw the container in a bin and then hopped on the motor and turned it on. “Er, can’t you tell me your name?” She wasn’t putting the helmet without at least a name. He chuckled and revved the engine, “Daniel Watson. Hop on.” The name was familiar, sort of. Or maybe she was just imagining it, the guy was hot and kind of reminded her of the bartender from last night. “You’re not a bartender by any chance right?” She hopped on and finally placed the helmet on. It was a little big on her head, she probably looked like a robot. Plus side though, his hair smelled good. She held one hand on his shoulder and the other on her suitcase. He let out a laugh, “I take on a lot of work.” They sped through the expressway. * They ended up in the uppity part of the city, if you knew what she meant. She stared at the five-star restaurant, her mouth hung low. “You want to catch flies with that?” A chuckle erupted from Daniel and she finally closed her mouth and ran her fingers through her messed up blonde hair. Somehow, her casual business attire now seemed like rags. She could see people wearing suit and tie fashion. “I probably should have cleaned up a bit.” It made her nose itchy. “Same clothes from last night?” “So you were at the party!” She threw a look at the man. “I never denied such a thing.” Daniel shrugged and walked into the restaurant, the doors opening as soon as he stepped outside the door. “Schmancy.” Alice whispered to herself as she walked after the man. The restaurant seemed to be a whole new world. The entire room was a beautiful palette of the morning sky; elaborate gold chandeliers hung and sparkled like the stars. “Good noon sir and madam. Shall I get a table for two?” “I’m with Blake.” The butler straightened up, if even more than possible to what Alice could have imagined, “Let me escort you right away!” Escort her to doom.
