Chapter 2“Hi, Dad. It’s me, Meredith.” Nothing but a blank stare. There was a smear of dried food on his chin. Meredith got up and moistened a washcloth at the bathroom sink and wiped it off before settling back into the chair next to his recliner. “Did you have fun on the field trip? You always used to love car shows.” Was that a smile? Or was Meredith just seeing what she wanted to see? His eyes still seemed glazed but he was wringing his hands. Was that a good sign or a bad one? Don’t think too much, just keep talking. His nurse said talking keeps him calm. Meredith talked about work, trying to ignore the way her dad’s clothes hung on him.
