Chapter Five:The offer

1040 Words
THE OFFER The next morning, velvet didn’t wake up to sunlight. She woke up to silence. The kind of silence that follows a storm or precedes one. Her phone had six missed calls from koko, a text from Cherry that just said “You’re trending, babe 👀”, and a headache splitting her temples like a warning. Velvet opened the club’s social media page, and there it was. A blurry photo from last night her silhouette on stage, frozen mid-arch, with a caption someone had posted: “Velvet seducing the devil himself 🥀” The camera had caught the man in the booth too. His face wasn’t fully visible, but his presence was undeniable. The darkness around him felt heavier than the shadows. Comments flooded the post. Who is he? That’s Luca Romano, right? Wtf? Is she sleeping with him? Careful, Velvet. The devil don’t love, he owns. Velvet closed the app. Her palms were sweating. She wasn’t the type to panic easily, but something about the way the internet whispered made her skin itch. The club thrived on gossip but this? This was dangerous attention. Men like Luca didn’t like their names mixed with dancers, much less with speculation. And yet… The memory of his voice in that alley last night “What’s your real name?” played over and over like a stuck record. She shouldn’t care. Shouldn’t wonder what he was thinking, or if he’d come again. She wasn’t some starry-eyed girl chasing danger. She was a survivor. She’d learned how to walk past men like him. But Luca Romano hadn’t walked past her. He’d stopped. And looked. And now her world wouldn’t sit still. --- Later That Night – Le Mirage Koko was pacing behind the bar when Lena walked in. “Don’t go on stage tonight,” she said sharply, before velvet could even speak. Velvet froze. “Excuse me?” “You heard me. You’re not dancing.” “Why?” Koko lowered her voice. “Because the kind of heat you’ve attracted doesn’t burn out. It explodes.” Velvet rolled her eyes, tugging off her jacket. “So I’m what now? A liability?” “No,” Koko napped. “You’re a target.” That word hit harder than it should have. Velvet swallowed. “Did he say something?” “He didn’t have to. His people came by this afternoon. Asked if your shifts could be... ‘flexible.’ You know what that means?” Velvet did. It meant control. It meant ownership. It meant Luca Romano wanted something and Luca Romano always got what he wanted. She exhaled. “So what? I’m just supposed to hide now? Let him scare me off?” Koko looked tired. “No. I’m asking you to be smart. Whatever this is don’t play into it unless you’re ready for the consequences.” Velvet said nothing. Because deep down, she already knew She was already playing. --- Midnight She didn’t go on stage. But she didn’t leave either. Instead, she stood in the back hallway, her body pressed against the wall like a secret, watching the club through the curtain. And then He walked in. No guards. No entourage. Just that same calm power wrapped in a charcoal gray coat. Luca moved like a man who’d never been denied a thing in his life. His eyes scanned the room and stopped when they found her watching. He tilted his head, just a little, like he was amused. Velvet ducked away from the curtain, heart hammering. “s**t,” she whispered. She shouldn’t talk to him. But she also couldn’t walk away. --- Ten Minutes Later – Private Lounge Velvet stood at the edge of the room while Luca sat like he owned the air. “I wasn’t expecting you,” she said, arms crossed. “You were watching for me.” She hated that he was right. “You shouldn’t be here.” “Neither should you,” he countered, his voice calm but laced with something darker. “You’re too smart for this place.” Velvet raised a brow. “You don’t even know me.” He leaned forward. “That’s where you’re wrong.” The silence stretched. Then he added, “You want out. Don’t you?” Her throat tightened. Velvet had never said that out loud. Not even to herself. But the truth was a wound, and he’d stuck his finger right in it. “I want options,” she said coolly. He nodded. “I can give you that.” She narrowed her eyes. “Why?” “Because I want to,” Luca said simply. And then he pulled something from his coat a small black envelope. She hesitated before taking it. Inside was a silver key card and a handwritten note. Room 908. Hotel Lucent. Tomorrow night. Midnight. No strings. Just conversation. Velvet looked up. “You expect me to show up?” “I don’t expect anything,” Luca said, rising to his feet. “But if you’re tired of performing for people who don’t see you... maybe try talking to someone who does.” He stepped past her, cologne and danger trailing in his wake. Then he paused, inches from her ear. “I won’t touch you,” he whispered, “unless you ask.” And then he was gone. Again. --- The Next Night – 11:59 PM Velvet stood in front of Hotel Lucent with the key card burning in her hand. She told herself not to come. Told herself this was stupid, reckless, dangerous. But her feet had a mind of their own. She stepped into the elevator. Pressed 9. The ride was slow. Too slow. Her reflection in the chrome doors looked calm but her heart was chaos. She found the door easily. Room 908. She didn’t knock. She just slid the key in, turned the handle, and stepped inside. The room was dim, lit only by the city lights bleeding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Luca was sitting on the couch, no jacket, sleeves rolled, drink in hand. He didn’t rise. Just looked at her like she was something fragile wrapped in fire. Velvet closed the door behind her and said “Start talking.”
