Chapter 16 The battle under the Full Moon

879 Words
The full moon hung heavy and luminous, bathing the Moon Ring in silver light so bright it cast no shadows. The pack stood in a tight circle around the standing stones, torches flickering at the perimeter, their flames struggling against the cold night wind. Elara stood at the center, the claiming mark on her neck still warm and tingling, the golden bond between her and Kai pulsing like a second heartbeat. The hunters had come. They emerged from the treeline like ghosts in white camouflage, rifles glinting, crossbows loaded with silver bolts. Twenty strong, led by the same man Elara had wounded the day before—his chest bandaged, eyes burning with hate. Behind them, chained wolves—more prisoners—were dragged forward, muzzles bound, eyes dull with wolfsbane. The lead hunter raised a hand. “Hand over the Luna b***h,” he shouted, voice carrying across the clearing. “Or we kill every wolf here, starting with your Alpha.” Kai stepped forward, black coat billowing in the wind, silver eyes glowing. “You’re on sacred ground. Leave now, or die here.” The hunter laughed. “Sacred? It’s just dirt and rocks. Tonight, we end your kind.” Elara felt the pack tense—growls rumbling low, claws flexing. She touched Kai’s arm. “We can’t let them hurt the prisoners.” Kai nodded. “We won’t.” Mara raised her voice. “Pack! Protect our own!” The wolves surged. Chaos erupted. Kai shifted first—black wolf leaping forward, tearing into the nearest hunter. Lena followed, claws raking, snarling fury. The pack moved as one, a wave of fur and fangs crashing against rifles and silver. Elara shifted too, brown-and-gold fur gleaming under the moon. She circled the prisoners, snapping chains with her jaws, ignoring the silver burn. One by one, the caged wolves staggered free, shaking off poison, joining the fight. Hunters fired wildly. Bolts whistled past. One struck an elder wolf in the shoulder—silver fire blooming. He fell with a yelp. Elara roared, leaping onto the hunter who fired, knocking the crossbow away. She didn’t kill—only disarmed, pinned, left for the pack to handle. Kai fought like a storm—black fur a blur, taking down three hunters before they could reload. But the lead hunter had a clear shot. He aimed at Elara’s back. Kai saw it first. He lunged across the clearing, massive body shielding her. The bolt struck his side—deep, silver burning through muscle and bone. He staggered, blood blooming dark on black fur. Elara screamed—human scream, then wolf howl. Rage exploded through her. She turned on the hunter, tackling him to the ground, claws at his throat. “Don’t,” Kai gasped, shifting back, blood pouring from his wound. “We don’t kill humans unless we must.” Elara froze, trembling. The hunter stared up at her, fear in his eyes. She released him. “Run,” she snarled. “Tell your people the Luna is claimed. The pack is whole. Come again, and there will be no mercy.” The hunter scrambled back. The remaining hunters retreated, dragging their wounded, fleeing into the trees. Silence fell. The pack gathered around Kai. He lay on the snow, breath shallow, silver eyes dimming. Elara shifted human, dropping to her knees beside him. “Kai…” He reached for her hand, weak. “You’re safe. That’s all that matters.” Tears streamed down her face. “No. You’re not allowed to leave me.” Mara knelt beside them. “The silver is deep. Wolfsbane in the tip. He needs time.” Elara shook her head. “No. We fix this now.” She looked to the pack. “The Luna bloodline heals. I feel it. Let me try.” Mara nodded slowly. “Place your hands on the wound. Call the moon. Call your bond.” Elara pressed her palms to Kai’s side, blood slicking her skin. She closed her eyes, reaching for the golden thread between them. It flared—bright, warm, alive. She whispered, “Come back to me.” The bond surged. Golden light poured from her hands, flowing into the wound. The silver poison hissed, burning away. Kai gasped, arching, then stilled. The wound closed—slowly, painfully, but surely. Scarring remained, but the blood stopped. Kai opened his eyes, silver bright again. He sat up, pulling her into his arms. “You saved me.” She sobbed against his shoulder. “Don’t ever do that again.” He kissed her hair. “I promise.” The pack howled—triumphant, relieved. The moon watched, full and approving. The hunters were gone. The prisoners freed. The pack whole. Elara and Kai stood, arms around each other, facing their people. Mara raised her voice. “The Luna has proven her strength. The Alpha is healed. The pack endures!” Howls rose to the sky—joyous, unbroken. Kai looked down at Elara, eyes shining. “Welcome home, Luna.” She smiled through tears. “Home is wherever you are.” They kissed under the full moon—slow, deep, eternal. The night was theirs. The future was theirs. And the bond between them burned brighter than the moon itself.
