Clara's POV
The organization was begining to get too comfortable with ordering me around to do s**t for them.
They had an agreement with me when I first agreed to become a pseudo member of the organization.
It seemed like I had to revisit that agreement with the council sometime soon. The fact that I benefited greatly from the agreement was one of the reasons holding me back.
The other was my friendship with Chris and my admiration and gratitude towards his mother, who doubles as my trainer.
They would probably be hurt and disappointed if I left the organization but I would do it if it was the only option I had left.
My train of thoughts was broken by the annoyingly gruff voice of Alphonso who was still on call with me. The old man was as persistent and convincing as the devil himself.
Alphonso: “Clara, it's because you’re the best at what you do. And because you’re the only one who can handle this quietly. The others will only make things messier and if we send out an entire quad, they will not be able to act subtly and may even end up startling the snake. We need someone who can move fast, stay under the radar, and take them down without drawing any attention.” He elaborated, Patiently making valid points that made my sigh in defeat.
I could practically see the triumphant grin on his face on the other side of the phone. Insufferably arrogant bastard.
Clara: “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. I'm the best old man, I worked for it. But did you really have to pick now? It would’ve been nice to actually enjoy one moment of accomplishment without being called into some vampire massacre.” I replied in a tone full of annoyance and defeat. It was pointless for me to argue at that time, honestly.
Alphonso: “I get it, Clara. But there’s no time to waste. These rogues are unpredictable, and their killing spree has been spreading. They've already killed eleven people, including both young women and children. You’re the only one who can do this swiftly and without making it a spectacle. I trust you. The council believes in your ability to take care of this quietly.” He also sighed, slightly apologetic but undeterred. I knew I could not back down the moment I heard the number of victims.
Clara: “Of course you do. Fine. I’ll handle it. But I swear, next time, I expect a little more notice, alright?” I replied him, sighing deeply.
Alphonso: “Understood. I’ll mail you the full details. That way you won't need to come to HQ. Just get this done. We can’t afford to let it escalate. And oh Clara, you might run into a certain person of interest.” He said and chuckled softly. Annoying old.... Hold the f**k on and rewind. what was that last thing he said again? A person of interest? f**k me, I was finally going to meet one of those bastards that killed my Nana. The old man could've started with that and I would have already been on the way. Damn old geezer.
Clara: “ Oh, I'll definitely make it quick. But if you call me in again when I’m in the middle of something… I’ll start charging you personally for the interruptions. Asshole.” I spoke through clenched teeth. I was still angry about getting interrupted.
But it wasn't enough for the old man to rile me up. He just went ahead and casually dropped a bomb like that on me as though he was talking about the weather, Damn it.
Every single member of the council knew how desperately I had been trying to get rid of those undead bastards. I was f*****g pissed off.
Normally, I was considered a very skilled huntress but at that moment, I became a deadly nightmare to the entire vampire community. Those Vampires had no idea what they had just gotten themselves into.
Alphonso: “We're counting on you, Clara. Don’t let us down. And please child, I hate the smell of hospitals and the morgue. So do well to save me the torture. ” Alphonso chuckled and then said in a little more serious tone.
Clara: “Yeah, yeah. You’ll get your update soon. And don't worry old man, you'll never get the chance to identify my body at the morgue nor pay me a hospital visit." I end the call afterwards and stared down at my weapons.
I muttered a string of curses at those dead vampires and Alphonso. But mostly, I was ready to m******e a few blood suckers.
I quickly packed everything I would need on the mission and headed out to go hunt some rogue vampires and settle a score. It was about time I avenged my Nana. Those vampires were basically existing on borrowed time at that moment.
Luther's POV
The air in the royal crypt was thick with anticipation as Luther Dracul III, the vampire king, prepared to let the magic he'd let out with his consciousness return to his body.
I could feel the power coursing through my veins, a sensation that had made me feel depressed in several decades to the point that I became numb to it's existence, became both exciting and terrifying him.
It had been a century since I had last tasted blood and I knew and understood what that would've meant for any other vampire. Death.
Thankfully, I was royalty. The king of Vampires. The most powerful of my kind on the planet, hence I could still use my abilities a little bit without having fed for several decades, but it was a very risky and reckless act.
I was currently weakened, vulnerable and unable to fully awaken my physical body or consciousness. My entire existence was dependent on the skills and loyalty my men had towards me as their king and general commander.
I couldn't depend on the magic of the forest to keep my people safe anymore. Not after watching how, it had allowed a huntress into the sacred grounds of our kingdom.
I was grateful and alarmed at the magic's willingness to grant her entrance. Grateful, because it led her to me and alarmed, because I had no idea why it didn't just make an illusion to confuse her.
I didn't have it in me to risk my life after I'd just found out I had a second chance mate. Any more attempts to use my magic would've caused a serious strain to my magical abilities and my soul's essence.
But I had no choice. My second chance mate was out there somewhere, and I needed my magic to be able to track her down, yet I couldn't muster the strength to do that. My magic had been weakened for far too long.
I had closed my eyes and focused. I allowed the magical essence around the crypt to flow back into me. It had filled me with a renewed sense of strength and purpose.
As the magic surged through my body, I felt a sense of exhilaration unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was as if I was being reborn.
My senses were heightened at least twice as much from the time I'd awakened and my natural instincts instincts sharpened.
A strong hunger for blood, the blood of my mate clawed at my stomach and made my throat parched. I felt like a man stuck in the desert, desperate for water. In my case, I was desperate for blood. The blood of my mate.
I could feel the dull pull for my second chance mate intensify, a faint whisper in the back of my mind, urging me on.
I had struggled with every fraction of willpower I could muster just to control the pull. The bond was way stronger than I had expected a newly formed bond to be.
But as the magic continued to flow into me, I knew that I could not let the bond consume my sanity and control my reasoning.
I needed to keep a tight rein on the bond and my magic. I had to control them, lest they would have successfully overwhelmed me.
With supreme effort and sheer willpower, I forced my subconscious to retreat back into the deepest recesses of my soul. With that done, I was able to wholly focus and controlled the magic enough to settle within me.
Before fully succumbing to the darkness that threatened to swallow me whole, I had allowed a small portion of my essence to reach out to my loyal friend and second in command, Alexandro.
I needed Alexandro to provide me a suitable feed. I desperately needed to feed and replenish my strength, so that I could officially commence the search for my mysterious mate.
But I also knew that I could not let anyone else know of my awakening, especially not the council nor my deranged brother.
My awakening was a secret that I needed to keep close to my chest, for the time being. It was for the best, until I found my mate and convinced her to accept our bond. Till then, I could not afford to let anyone else know of my sudden awakening.
As I lay in the tranquil darkness of the crypt, waiting for Alexandro to receive my message and arrive, I felt a sense of both excitement and apprehension.
As a predatory creature, hunting was something that appealed to the wild, feral part of my being. But my little mate was also a skilled Huntress. She was trained to excel at hunting my kind, which made her a qualified quasi predator.
I knew from the moment I found out she was a huntress that the hunt for my little mate would not be easy, still, I was determined to succeed.
And with my magic now fully restored, I knew that I stood a fighting chance. I just needed to feed so my physical body would also awaken.
The mystery surrounding my mate's identity as a huntress who was obviously a human but had the feel of a fae.
Not forgetting the heavy challenge of convincing her to accept me had filled my heart with a sense of purpose that I had not felt in several decades.
My thoughts were interrupted by the hasty, yet quiet sound of footsteps approaching, I knew instantly that it could only be Alexandro with my feed. It was time to awaken and hunt down my little huntress.
