We were now traveling alongside the great green wall but at a distance great enough that it would appear and disappear depending on the amount of dust in the air. It wasn’t on our map, of course, nor had anyone in our party ever gone its full length, but Tiresias told us he’d once seen a plot stolen from a Herder’s camp that showed that it cut a steep angle from somewhere on the new Gulf Coast of Texas up to what had once been Green Bay, Wisconsin. It wasn’t known what happened after that, as there were few sectors that far north.
He said that the Tops really had no interest in administering a huge empire like the Romans and that, although there had been some efforts made to confederate the Cities, their policy was mostly one of “benign neglect” as long as we kept dying.
