Sophie's Point Of View
I look over at Celeste. What is she doing in this place?
Ignoring Xavier, she says numbly, “Your mother told me to come along,” then sits down behind us and plugs in her earbuds.
There is no word from Xavier. Returning to his seat, he resumes typing on his laptop.
He no longer even gives a damn about my flight phobia. At last, the plane takes off, and I jam Twinkles into my mouth.
“Get up, Sophie.” He says.
“Huh?” The aeroplane is no longer moving when I open my eyes.
Were we already on the ground?
I went to sleep and when?
Almost everyone has disembarked from the aircraft when I wake up. I was awakened by Brent, and Xavier is nowhere to be seen.
I give him a trembling smile in return. He assists me in leaving the aircraft by holding out his hand.
