Designing Destiny

Lucas's secretary entered, "Good morning, Mr. Yale. Your meeting with Mr. Griffins is in two hours—" "What else?" Lucas interrupted, his tone firm. The secretary hesitated, "Erm... I received a response from Miss Miller regarding the design entry." "Speak up," Lucas urged. The secretary handed Lucas her iPad. As he scrolled through the email, he instructed, "Tell her the company accepts her terms. We'll need more designs from her for the competition entry." The secretary looked concerned. "But, sir, are we really using her designs for the competition entry? We don't know her, and her designs seem too good to be true." Lucas chuckled, his expression stern. "Mediocrity has consumed you all. It's time I shake up the design department. You'd better step up, or you'll be replaced soon." The secretary's eyes widened, frozen in surprise. "I'm sorry, sir," she stammered. Lucas gestured dismissively, signaling her to leave. *** Olivia sat on the couch when her phone beeped. She quickly got up and strode across the room to retrieve it. With Laura out at work, Olivia was alone at home. She picked up her phone and returned to the couch, her heart racing with anticipation. As she opened her email, a smile spread across her face: Yale's group of companies had accepted her terms. Excited, Olivia immediately called Laura to share the news. "Hey, guess what?" she asked, her voice trembling with enthusiasm. Laura answered, slightly distracted by her work. "Hey, baby, what's up? I'm in the middle of something. Spill already." Olivia couldn't contain her excitement. "Yale's group accepted my terms! I got the job!" she exclaimed. Laura's tone changed instantly. "Oh my goodness, are you serious? That's amazing! I'm so happy for you!" As they chatted, Laura reminded Olivia that she needed to start working on new designs right away. "You have to get started on those designs immediately." Olivia agreed, feeling a sense of urgency. "Yeah, you're right. I'll begin right away. I don't want to risk losing this opportunity." Laura offered to pick up something on her way home. "What would you like me to get you? Do you want something special?" "Some pastries would be great, thanks," Olivia replied. With a promise to see each other later, they hung up. Olivia paced around the room, still buzzing with excitement, before settling in to start working on her new designs. As Olivia immersed herself in her designs, her creativity flowed effortlessly. Hours passed, and her ideas transformed into stunning visuals. Laura arrived home with pastries, Olivia's eyes lit up. "You're the best!" she exclaimed, taking a pastry and savoring the sweet treat. Laura smiled, setting down her bag. "I'm just happy to see you thriving." She glanced at Olivia's designs, impressed. "Wow, these look incredible." With renewed energy, Olivia worked tirelessly, fueled by Laura's encouragement. As the night wore on, her designs neared completion. The next morning, Olivia submitted her work, feeling confident. Days turned into weeks, and anticipation grew. Then, the email arrived: Yale's group wanted Olivia to present her designs. But with her advanced pregnancy and the problems she left behind, traveling was out of the question. Olivia's heart skipped a beat as she requested a Skype meeting instead, and to her relief, it was promptly approved. With Laura's support, she prepared for the online presentation, rehearsing her pitch and perfecting her delivery. The day of her Skype presentation finally arrived, and Olivia's nerves were on edge as she settled in front of her computer, her hands trembling slightly as she waited for the call to connect. As the Skype call connected, Olivia's hands trembled slightly. She saw Lucas Yale and several other team members on the screen, their faces attentive and interested. Lucas's eyes narrowed, trying to place her, but his expression remained stern. Olivia began her presentation, showcasing her designs on the screen. Lucas's eyes sparkled with interest, and he leaned forward, taking notes. As Olivia spoke, Lucas's gaze lingered on her face, trying to recall where he had met her before. The features seemed familiar, but he couldn't quite place her. Suddenly, it clicked – the woman he'd met at the hotel that night, the one he'd accidentally collided with when he was drugged. Lucas's eyes widened in surprise, and his voice trailed off. "You're...?" he said, his tone hesitant, as if piecing together the memory. Olivia smiled, unaware of Lucas's revelation. "Yes, I'm Olivia, the designer." She continued her presentation, her passion evident. When Olivia finished, Lucas nodded thoughtfully. "Impressive," he said. "We'll be in touch soon." As the call ended, Olivia felt a sense of pride. She had given it her all. *** After the meeting, Lucas turned to his assistant, Nat. "I want you to find out more about this designer," he said, his voice low and urgent. "I have a feeling she's the one we've been looking for." Nat's eyes lit up with interest. "You think so?" He asked keenly. Lucas's expression was thoughtful. "I have no idea, but I think she might be the one. While she was speaking, I had a flashback, and I felt a slight resemblance between her and... someone." His voice trailed off, leaving Nat curious. "Just gather everything I should know about her. She has to be the one." Nat nodded and left the meeting room. As soon as he was gone, Lucas took out his phone and dialed Seth's number. "Hey, what's good, man?" Seth's voice came over the phone, casual and laid-back. Lucas's tone was more serious. "Anything yet?" Seth's tone shifted slightly. "Yes, I was able to gather a few things from that night. We should sit and talk over a bottle or two." Lucas's response was firm. "Trivet, 7 pm. Don't be late." Seth chuckled. "Chill out, man. Why so formal? You're not in some sort of work meeting, neither are you addressing your workers." Lucas's voice remained calm, but with a hint of intensity. "You have no idea, Seth. This Olivia girl is messing with my head." Seth's laughter echoed through the phone. "Alright, 7 pm tonight. You'll explain better then." "Cool," Lucas said, ending the call with a firm tap on his phone screen.
