Charlotte Monroe's smile froze on her lips.
Seeing his cold expression, she finally realized he might be angry.
She walked over to him, took his hand, and like magic, placed the ring in his palm.
"Sorry, I was busy getting your birthday gift yesterday, that's why I forgot you at the villa. Can you forgive me this time?"
Did she think he would definitely forgive her by using such a flawed lie to brush him off?
Declan Kane stared at her without saying a word, nor did he take the ring.
After waiting for her response for a long time, Charlotte Monroe sighed and waved the ring in front of her eyes.
"Why have you been so distracted lately? Is something bothering you?"
Declan Kane finally looked away, turning his gaze to the window, and spoke softly, "There is something bothering me. A friend of mine recently discovered that his long-time girlfriend has been deceiving him. He found out the truth and came to me for advice, asking whether he should forgive her."
So it was over such a trivial matter.
She chuckled for a moment, then gave a very rational response.
"What’s there to worry about? Any form of deceit isn’t worth forgiving. Just break up."
"Any form of deceit isn’t worth forgiving."
Declan Kane mimicked her tone and repeated the sentence.
Charlotte Monroe smiled and nodded, then ruffled his hair. "That's right, my boy, don’t let yourself be fooled in the future."
Watching her movements, he finally revealed a faint smile.
"Let's take this sentence as mutual encouragement, for both you and me."
Charlotte Monroe frowned, about to ask what it meant when the phone in her pocket suddenly rang.
Without even looking, she casually pressed the answer button.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Charlotte. Let's talk."
Standing close, Declan Kane recognized it was Finn Wilder's voice.
She looked up and saw Charlotte Monroe's expression freeze for a few seconds before quickly returning to normal.
She murmured a soft "mm" in response, quickly hung up the phone, and then found an excuse to leave.
Seeing the ring left on the table, Declan Kane got up and walked into the room.
After working on his manuscript for two hours, he decided to take a break and casually opened his social media feed.
Scrolling down, he noticed that Finn Wilder, whom he had just added yesterday, had posted a status update half an hour ago.
"Eight years have passed, and you're still the girl who softens as soon as I coax you. It's wonderful."
The accompanying picture was a plate of crayfish and a hand in the process of peeling the shell.
Looking at those slender hands and the familiar bracelet on the wrist, Declan Kane smiled softly and turned off his phone.
In the following days, Charlotte Monroe never returned, only occasionally sending a message saying she was busy.
Through Finn Wilder's social media, Declan Kane clearly kept track of her itinerary.
Watching the sunrise by the sea, enjoying fireworks at the amusement park, camping in the countryside...
Declan Kane knew that Finn Wilder was posting these updates for him alone to see.
But instead of getting angry and questioning her as she had imagined, he was fully occupied with packing his luggage.
Over the years in New Haven, he bought many things, and it took several days to clear them out in batches.
He donated all the valuables, and just as he was about to rest after the charity organization took them away, Charlotte Monroe called.
He answered, but it wasn’t her speaking; it was her best friend, Jackson Cole.
"Declan, Charlotte got into a conflict with someone and is about to race for her life. Please come to the club and talk her out of it!"
Hearing this, Declan Kane's right eyelid twitched violently a few times.
After hesitating for a while, he finally picked up the keys and hailed a car to rush to the club.
As soon as the car arrived, Jackson Cole, who was waiting at the door, ran over to lead the way, explaining the whole story on the way.
"A few days ago, Finn fell in love with a pair of tea cups at an auction. While Charlotte was in the restroom, someone else snatched them. Seeing how much he liked them, Charlotte insisted on buying them from that person. That person is also a racing enthusiast, and his family is well-off, so he proposed a big bet. The two agreed to race, and the winner would take the tea cups."
"If it were just an ordinary track, I wouldn’t bother you, but they’ve chosen the path of death. That route is incredibly dangerous; even Schumacher wouldn’t make it out unscathed. Declan, you’re Charlotte’s boyfriend, please try to talk them out of it!"
