Chapter XLIII Escape It was a cold evening at the end of April. It had rained all day and the heavy clouds had scattered only towards the evening, to give way to little blue spots. During the train journey Fosco he kept on looking outside but he could not see anything. The rain was running down the window creating a liquid barrier that was blurring the contours of the landscape, but his thoughts were making him apart from what surrounded him. He did not know what was ahead for him and how long he would have been away. He got off the train at almost dusk, just when the lamp posts were being lit up.
