The letter
Clara had heard of the Luciano’s decision from Fosco
-He has decided to leave for Spain-
-Why ?-
The dry question came unexpectedly in the silence of the room where they were getting ready to go to bed. Fosco expected another kind of reaction and was he ready to answer to “when?”,“with who?” “How do you know?” He wasn’t ready for “why”. He felt a kind of reproach against him in that question. He was particularly attached to Luciano, more than to all the others. He appreciated his logical rigor, moral straightforwardness, curiosity and ease of learning.
