Chapter LXX Giulia The church was silent. There was only a dim light of a lamp placed overhead. The altar, towering with its gold friezes, occupied the opposite wall where angels with enriched tunics which fell to their feet were guarding the tabernacle. One held a goblet, another a closed book. Their gaze more than being compassionate was haughty, as if to dissuade anyone who wasn’t authorized from coming closer. She had never felt at ease in that church, with those great stern statues unattainable in their beauty and the astonishing golden ornaments. She remembered the few times that on solemn occasions she would wear her best clothes and with her aunts she would go to the ten o"clock mass.
