Despite the exhaustion written all over me after a month abroad, every piece I wore had been custom-made by a foreign designer.
The problem was not my appearance. These people simply had no taste.
I could not even be bothered arguing with them anymore. I looked at Jade and let out a cold laugh. "I never realized charity work could produce a counterfeit wife."
Then I turned toward the sales manager. "A car worth over ten million, and this is how casually you handle delivery?" I asked. "Someone shows up with an ID and you hand over the keys without verifying anything with the actual owner?"
The manager opened his mouth, then closed it again, unable to answer.
Jade immediately stepped in with her usual fake generosity. "Vivian, they're all working people here as you are. Why make things hard for them?" she said softly. "People should know their place and use things that match their status."
She glanced meaningfully at the car behind her. "Cars like this are meant to be admired from a distance. Your yearly salary probably couldn't even cover one of its hood ornaments. Even if you're jealous, there's no need to lash out at me."
She puffed out her lips in a wounded pout, looking so pitiful that anyone watching would have assumed I was the aggressor. Then she pulled out her phone and made a call.
"Honey..." Her voice instantly turned sweet and fragile. "There's a woman here insisting I'm not your wife. She's even threatening to report us for fraud..."
As she spoke, she shot me a smug look.
I almost laughed. "Interesting," I said. "I'd love to know when Marcus secretly married someone like you."
Marcus's furious voice exploded through the speaker. "Who knows what kind of nonsense she picked up overseas for an entire month? She's probably lost her mind."
Then his tone softened immediately. "Don't worry, baby. I'm coming right now. Let's see who thinks they can bully you."
Every word out of his mouth felt like a slap across my face. The looks from the surrounding crowd turned even uglier.
Several sales associates hurried over to comfort Jade, handing her tissues while glaring at me like I was some irrational ex-girlfriend causing a scene.
Jade took another step toward me, her voice dripping with false concern. "My husband will be here any minute," she said quietly. "You should leave while you still can. That's my advice."
She stroked the car beside her with deliberate pride. "He bought this car for me without even blinking. Over ten million, just like that. If he sees someone treating me this way..." She smiled faintly. "I'm afraid you won't be able to handle the consequences."
I clenched my jaw so hard it hurt. My temples throbbed violently.
'That disgusting couple.'
The thought had barely crossed my mind when Marcus stormed through the dealership doors. He did not even spare me a glance. He shoved me aside and pulled Jade straight into his arms.
I lost my balance instantly. My lower back slammed hard against the metal door handle of the display car behind me. Pain shot through my spine so sharply that my vision blurred for a second.
"Don't be scared, baby. I'm here now." Marcus held Jade tightly, his voice impossibly gentle. "Let's see who thinks they can mess with my wife."
I froze. I had never heard him speak to me that way before. Not once.
He carefully wiped at the tears on Jade's face even though there were barely any there to begin with. She immediately curled herself tighter against his chest, her voice sugary and soft.
"Honey, you're the best. I knew you'd protect me. She's been bullying me this entire time. I was so scared..."
Marcus rubbed her back soothingly before finally lifting his eyes toward me. There was no guilt in his expression, only cold disgust. Then he walked over and kicked me hard in the shin. Pain exploded up my leg. He pointed at me furiously.
"Don't push your luck," he snapped. "I gave you rides to work a few times and suddenly you think my car belongs to you? You actually followed my wife all the way to the dealership to harass her?"
I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain. Looking at the fury on his face, I suddenly realized how unfamiliar he had become.
