The forest seemed alive.
Every step Elara took was mirrored by shifting shadows, whispers curling around her like smoke. Kael stayed close, his presence grounding her, but even he could not mask the tension in the air.
“They’re watching,” Kael said, voice low, eyes scanning every tree. “The forest is testing us.”
Elara’s fingers tingled. The magic inside her pulsed stronger than it had since the gate closed. She could feel the energy stretching beyond the trees, brushing her mind with images she didn’t fully understand. Something—someone—was calling, and it wasn’t friendly.
A sudden scream shattered the morning air. Birds scattered, cawing into the fog. Elara froze. The sound was unmistakably human, but distorted, as if it had been twisted by dark magic.
“Over there,” Kael said, pointing toward a thicket. Without thinking, Elara ran, her instincts pushing her forward.
Through the tangled undergrowth, she saw a figure crouched on the ground. It shimmered, half-formed, shifting like a shadow in a storm. Elara stopped. It turned, revealing eyes that glowed gold, pupils narrow like a predator’s.
“You are… awake,” it whispered, voice layered and echoing. “Guardian of the Key. And yet… untested.”
Elara’s heart pounded, but she stepped forward. “I don’t know who—or what—you are. Leave now!”
The shadow laughed—a sound that made the ground beneath her shiver. “Leave? No. You are meant to face me. To learn what lies beyond your power.”
Before she could react, the shadow lunged. Instinct took over. Magic flared from her hands, roots bursting from the earth to intercept it. The impact sent her flying backward, crashing into Kael.
He caught her instantly. “Elara!”
She scrambled to her feet, fear twisting into determination. “I’m not afraid.”
The shadow paused, studying her. “We’ll see.”
A sudden roar echoed from the distance—something massive, unseen, moving faster than thought. The forest trembled. The shadow’s eyes widened, and it hissed, retreating into the fog.
Kael grabbed her hand. “This was just the first test. Whatever that thing was… it’s part of what’s coming.”
Elara looked at the forest, heart hammering. The mist thickened, whispering secrets she couldn’t yet name. Something ancient was awake. Something far older than Ronan Vale.
And it was watching her.
Elara’s grip tightened on Kael’s hand. “Then we face it. Together.”
The shadows shifted again, silently, waiting.
The test had only begun.
