A knock came just as I set Scarlett in her crib for the night. I froze. No one ever knocked this late. And certainly not here, on the second floor of a building where people mostly kept to themselves unless they were drunk or fighting. My heart kicked into my throat. Quietly, I stepped to the front door, glancing through the peephole. Jack. He stood there like a shadow come to life. Hood down. Hair slightly tousled from the breeze. Four large brown paper bags rested in his arms. Another two sat on the ground by his feet. Groceries. My groceries. But five times what I had. Panic ran through my body.
