Chapter 13: The Grocery Store Moment

219 Words
The grocery store felt unusually cold and impersonal. Tahlia wandered down the baby aisle, staring at the shelves lined with pastel bowls, plates, and cups. Her fingers itched to pick something soft and safe, something that could bring her small comfort in the chaos of her life. But the idea felt ridiculous. What would people think if they saw a grown woman clutching a toddler’s sippy cup? Her cheeks burned as she imagined the judgmental eyes passing by. Maybe they thought she was weak. Or broken. Just as she hesitated, a familiar voice broke through her embarrassment. “Which one do you like?” Marcus asked gently as he stepped beside her, holding a basket. She blinked, surprised by his presence—and his question. Marcus picked up a soft pink plate covered in little stars and smiled. “This one’s cute. Want to add it to our cart?” Tahlia smiled back, warmth blooming in her chest. “Yeah. I do.” They walked through the aisles together, their hands brushing, her fingers wrapping around the pastel plate. For the first time, she felt accepted—her needs, her softness, her journey—all without explanation or shame. In that moment, surrounded by ordinary grocery store noises and bright fluorescent lights, Tahlia felt a quiet kind of peace.
