Chapter 9: Back to Real Life

370 Words
The next morning came too fast. Cleo woke up crying because her bunny was missing—Tahlia found it wedged behind the dresser. Jasper wet the bed and was mortified. Damon had a pimple and refused to go to school. Dylan insisted he had a stomach ache five minutes before they had to leave. Marcus was already out the door, muttering something about the water bill and needing to call the plumber. Tahlia stood in the kitchen, barely dressed, trying to make toast while packing lunchboxes one-handed and bouncing Cleo on her hip. Her eyes stung from lack of sleep. Her body ached from all the bending and lifting. Her mind buzzed with the usual list of things she’d never quite finish. She’d had a beautiful moment last night. Peaceful. Healing. But life didn’t stop just because you found a sliver of softness. And still—something was different. In the middle of the morning chaos, Dylan snapped at her, “You never listen to me!” And instead of snapping back, Tahlia paused, took a breath, and said gently, “I’m listening now. Tell me again.” That moment of softness? It had stayed with her. Later that afternoon, when Cleo napped and the house was finally quiet, Tahlia didn’t turn on the TV or scroll her phone. Instead, she walked to her little corner, sat on the rug, and hugged the small stuffed bear she’d ordered online last week. She took a sip from her sippy cup—vanilla almond milk, her favorite—and curled into her blanket. Just fifteen minutes. Just enough time to breathe. To reset. She didn't disappear from her responsibilities. She didn't stop being a mother or a partner. But now she had somewhere safe to land. That evening, Marcus came home and kissed her on the forehead without saying a word. After the kids were in bed, he brushed her hair—awkwardly, tenderly—and said, “I know I forgot the bin again. But I remembered this.” Tahlia smiled. It wasn’t perfect. The bills still came. The noise still returned. But now, in the middle of the mess, there were soft places. And sometimes, soft was more than enough.
