CHAPTER 69

The monolith kept rising. Stone ground against stone, echoing through the quarry with a low groan that made the air vibrate in my chest. Snow slid off its sides as it climbed higher, impossibly tall, as if the earth had been hiding a skyscraper beneath its skin. Runes carved across its surface flared slowly to life, glowing faint silver like moonlight trapped in granite. My arm burned. The runes on my forearm lit up the exact same color. The connection hit me so hard I staggered. Nathan caught me immediately, stepping in front of me like a living shield. His arms braced across my body, blocking the monolith from view. I shoved at his chest. “If you shield me any harder, I will suffocate.” His jaw clenched, eyes not leaving the stone tower. “Good.” “Did you just say good?” “Yes.”
