Pursuit

317 Words
Piercing screams cut through the otherwise silence of what had been a beautiful, snowy night. Unusual weather for this time of the year, let alone in this region. The night air was crisp, the moon casting an ethereal glow over the snow-covered landscape surrounding the Laurent family mansion, nestled deep within the secluded confines of the exclusive community of Veiled Moon Shadow. As thick flakes danced in the air, Emma Laurent ran through the forest, her heart pounding in her chest, fear gripping her soul. Her breath came out in ragged gasps, the cold air burning her lungs as she pushed herself to go faster. She could hear the pounding of footsteps behind her, echoing through the silent woods like a drumbeat of impending doom. Her pursuer unyielding in their desperate attempt to capture her, for what she was no longer certain. With each step, Emma felt the weight of the unknown pressing down upon her, a suffocating blanket of uncertainty that threatened to consume her whole. Tears stung her eyes as she stumbled over the uneven ground, branches reaching out like gnarled fingers to ensnare her. Finally, unable to see clearly in the night, blinded by her tears and the falling snow, Emma collapsed to the ground, after tripping over what felt like a large rock as her small body felt itself collide with its hard surface. Her body was trembling with exhaustion and fear. She curled into a tight ball, her screams tearing through the stillness of the night, a desperate plea for salvation in the face of impending danger. She was uncertain as to how far she had run. She could only hope that it was not too far for someone, anyone, in her family to hear her. At this moment, Emma would even be happy to see the face of Alex, though she hated it when he treated her like a helpless child.
