CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2027 9:05am Something wasn’t right. The way people looked at him. It had started at home, that old woman with the dog, barking at him, growling, and her glaring, as if he stole something from her. Then the eyes on the subway, everybody wary, everybody distancing themselves from him. They thought he was sick or something, contagious. He should be shunned. It continued at the office. They knew something he didn’t. Some secret, some story that shocked. He was a disgrace, a pariah. Something had happened. In his office the feeling persisted.
