CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2027 8:34pm The beers were cold and Marcus was mesmerized by the water clinging to the outside of the bottles. He remembered the complexity of simulating the simple concept of condensation. Hannah broke his concentration by lifting her bottle and he raised his own beer to join the toast she was making. “To the bad guys being in jail,” she said and clinked his bottle. “It always comes at a price.” “To those who didn’t deserve it,” Marcus added. They held their bottles for a beat and each took a drink. Marcus set his drink down and looked across the table at the detective. Her eyes held secrets from her past, dark, maybe dangerous. She was stronger than him, braver, more worldly. There was nothing they had in common. But she was fun to be around,
