Mike was no great fan of the police, but Marcus’s decision to ditch the detective made him uncomfortable. It was inconsistent with Marcus’s character. Mike saw it in his eyes when he had burst into the lobby and pulled the receptionist aside for a hurried discussion. Mike saw it in Marcus’s motion as he grabbed Mike by the arm and almost dragged him from the lobby, urging him to move more quickly. They had driven away from the World Within offices at what he could only describe as a reckless pace. It was a stunt Mike would make, not Marcus. The idea that the roles had changed was disquieting. It made Mike realize how much Marcus had always been the stable one. He wasn’t sure it was a part he could play.
